Abe,
"In a tiny PC, I would look for one that is fanless or with a very quiet fan."
I spent two minutes changing the fan profile in the Intel NUC BIOS from cool to quiet. The fan runs for 2-3 seconds during boot up and then it stays off during normal use.
In four months use, I heard the fan go on once when Windows 10 Defender maxed all the cores. A bit of Windows 10 weirdness.

That's good news. I like the Intel NUC series, but not when high-end audio manufacturers stuff one into their own pretty custom enclosure and jack the price over 10x. No joke, we've seen these things reviewed in the audio press. ;-)I would think that the HP Z2 is not well suited for music server duty. It houses high-end CPUs and high-end graphics found more typically in CAD workstations that require high-end cooling from noisy fans. In fact, the HP Z2 photos show two blowers inside. One for the CPU, and one for the graphics.

You can buy an Intel NUC with Ram, SSD or hard drive and OS installed. However, I bought the NUC kit so that I could choose the other components.
For my personal PC, I chose 16 GB of Ram, a 1 TB m.2 SSD and Windows 10 Pro (OEM). Zero 3rd party shovelware. Buy such a configuration from Dell, HP or Lenovo and you usually pay a steep premium compared to the base configuration.
Building a PC from a NUC kit is very quick and easy compared to building a tower or HTPC style desktop PC.

"HP is targeting CAD, design, graphics and 3D users, though it could make a decent gaming rig in some configurations."
