In Reply to: RE: HEEELP - Ayre QB9 24/96 not recognised by Late 2013 13" Retina MBP posted by AbeCollins on November 10, 2016 at 08:41:59
Hi AbeCollins,
Thanks again for your feedback and suggestions.
I did try the 2013 MBP with Yosomite originally and when it did not work I upgraded to Sierra in the hope that will fix the problem but it still did not work.
On my other four MAC computers I tried the same DAC with SnowLeopard, Mavericks, Yosomite, El Capitan and Sierra and it worked with ALL the above operating systems, just not with the 2013 Retina MAC.
I think I will call a priest next, my machine might be possessed.
I have run out of all other logical explanations.
Jokes apart, I am considering upgrading my Ayre to the latest DSD version as I heard this sounds even better. Perhaps the newer model will work with the newer computer better but if there is a fundamental compatibility issue I am surprised that there is nothing on the internet from any users experiencing the same issue.
Thanks again for your help AbeCollins,
Gaby

Gaby,
You tried the Ayre with Yosemite in the 2013 and it didn't work. Then you tried it with macOS and it didn't work. Did you try different usb port in the Mac to see if one of them is bad? Did you try a different usb cord?
Craig
Hi Craig,
I tried different USB cords and tried all the different USB ports on the computer with the same unsuccessful results. No Cigar...
Other USB products work on the computer just not the Ayre DAC.
I will try AbeCollins suggestion and see if a different USB DAC shows the same problem or not. I'll report back.
Thanks for your feedback,
Gaby

That's really interesting because this -may- point to a hardware issue with your fast 13" MacBook Pro. If the Ayre DAC works with everything else EXCEPT your fast 13" MBP using Yosemite OR Sierra, thats rather odd.
You may want to try plugging in other USB devices just to see if they are recognized in System Report.
If you have another USB DAC (maybe borrowed from your dealer, or take your laptop to your dealer's shop), you can at least try another USB DAC to see if it works or not on this Mac.
Oh and by the way, the original QB-9 24/96 is quite different from the latest QB-9 DSD. They not only incorporated DSD functionality but the PCM section is all new. I'm not sure what it would cost to do the upgrade and how long it will take. Ayre is usually pretty helpful so give them a call or email.
Good luck!
Thanks AbeCollins...
