There have been reports of macOS Sierra USB problems with some DACs, not just your make and model. Make sure you have the latest macOS update installed. You may need to wait a while for this to get worked out.Unless someone owns the two generations old Ayre QB9 24/96 version, AND is running macOS Sierra, you are not likely to find the answer to your specific problem here.
Have you contacted Ayre? Perhaps they've tried it.

Thanks AbeCollins, I haven't tried contacting Ayre yet. I thought to check with the forum first in case it was something obvious or familiar to others.
I am not a computer expert but I am not a novice either and I have tried all the logical potential solutions and nothing has worked so far.
Very weird..
It's really curious that only your 13" 2013 MBP doesn't recognize the DAC but the other Macs do. Did you ever have the Ayre DAC working on your 2013 MBP possibly under Yosemite or El Capitan? What about another brand/model USB DAC on your 2013 MBP?
Have you looked at your System Report under USB with the DAC connected to see if the DAC hardware is being recognized as being electrically connected? Do other USB devices work normally?
Hi AbeCollins,
No I never tried the Ayer with the 13" Retina Mac before. I have always used it with my older 15" unibody MBP. I thought to try the 13" Retina expecting better sound as it is the fastest machine I have. That's when I found it was not picking the Ayre up.
When I go into the system report under USB the Ayre is not showing at all so the computer is not even seeing the Ayre. However other USB devices work normally when I connect them to the same USB sockets of the 13" Retina Mac. Just does not make sense.
I will check with the Ayre distributor I bought the unit from in case he is familiar with the mystery.
Thanks again Abe,
Gaby
From your original post:
I have even updated the OS from Yosemite to the latest Sierra but still no luck.
So you tried the Ayre on the fast 13" MacBook Pro AFTER it was already updated to macOS Sierra?
There are known issues with macOS Sierra for USB audio.
There are two things working against you. Old generation USB DAC on the latest generation macOS Sierra.
If your brave you can try your DAC on one of your other Macs to ensure that it works, then update that Mac to macOS Sierra and see if it no longer works. That would point to macOS Sierra as the culprit.
Also, see my post to oldmkvi about his AV+/Sierra Problem.
I'd suggest trying another USB DAC just for grins but you may still run into issues until the drivers in macOS Sierra are fixed. It might still be worth a try with a newer USB DAC.... it doesn't have to be an expensive one. Maybe your dealer can help.
Hi AbeCollins,
Thanks again for your feedback and suggestions.
I did try the 2013 MBP with Yosomite originally and when it did not work I upgraded to Sierra in the hope that will fix the problem but it still did not work.
On my other four MAC computers I tried the same DAC with SnowLeopard, Mavericks, Yosomite, El Capitan and Sierra and it worked with ALL the above operating systems, just not with the 2013 Retina MAC.
I think I will call a priest next, my machine might be possessed.
I have run out of all other logical explanations.
Jokes apart, I am considering upgrading my Ayre to the latest DSD version as I heard this sounds even better. Perhaps the newer model will work with the newer computer better but if there is a fundamental compatibility issue I am surprised that there is nothing on the internet from any users experiencing the same issue.
Thanks again for your help AbeCollins,
Gaby
Gaby,
You tried the Ayre with Yosemite in the 2013 and it didn't work. Then you tried it with macOS and it didn't work. Did you try different usb port in the Mac to see if one of them is bad? Did you try a different usb cord?
Craig
Hi Craig,
I tried different USB cords and tried all the different USB ports on the computer with the same unsuccessful results. No Cigar...
Other USB products work on the computer just not the Ayre DAC.
I will try AbeCollins suggestion and see if a different USB DAC shows the same problem or not. I'll report back.
Thanks for your feedback,
Gaby

That's really interesting because this -may- point to a hardware issue with your fast 13" MacBook Pro. If the Ayre DAC works with everything else EXCEPT your fast 13" MBP using Yosemite OR Sierra, thats rather odd.
You may want to try plugging in other USB devices just to see if they are recognized in System Report.
If you have another USB DAC (maybe borrowed from your dealer, or take your laptop to your dealer's shop), you can at least try another USB DAC to see if it works or not on this Mac.
Oh and by the way, the original QB-9 24/96 is quite different from the latest QB-9 DSD. They not only incorporated DSD functionality but the PCM section is all new. I'm not sure what it would cost to do the upgrade and how long it will take. Ayre is usually pretty helpful so give them a call or email.
Good luck!
Thanks AbeCollins...
for the supposedly 'superior' usb2 driverless MAC!
Drivers are a good thing in that they go some way to ensure that dac makers provide working interfaces.
