James Burke is my favorite science journalist. He made a six episode series in 1980 called The Real Thing that explored perception.
I found it uploaded on YouTube and watched it again earlier this year. If the Atlantic article piqued your interest, I suggest giving it a watch. The first half hour is cheesy, but then it gets into the meat.

The Day the Universe Changed, Connections, Circles... So much awesome stuff from James Burke. It was because of him I have an appreciation of history. He made if fun :)
