"SQ depends as much on the hardware setup, OS setup, and player setup as much as the player itself. If each component is not 'optimally' configured in a system, then quality suffers. Such things as latency, buffers, and player priority also come into significant play.
I can make HQ Player sound similar to Foobar, with the later being preferred when outputting via KS with minimal buffers and Foobar on Realtime priority in Windows.
Such things as anti virus software for web going systems degrade SQ substantially."
OK, l'm intrigued. I've read that configuring realtime priorities in Windows isn't recommended. Have you experienced any ill effects? Also, "OS setup" - any recommended tweaks in Windows 10?
Unfortunately, I stream from Tidal and, to my knowledge, can't address the "web going systems degrade SQ substantially" issue without buying each song and downloading.

The best player priority setting seems to be related to resource load and latency. With very low latency systems (use latency mon 6) I get the best sound with the real time setting.
There are perhaps 50-100 combinations of settings for hardware and software in a windows audio system but the easiest thing to do is to listen while invoking task manager/services in which you can disable deemed unnecessary services one by one and listen for changes. If the system doesn't like it, it will refuse to disable.
You should find that networks and AVG have significant effects on SQ. Wireless also often results in big increases in latency.
fmak,
Thanks for the info. I have some experimenting to do this weekend.
