I won't say much, other than to say that the weakest part of Computer Audio is probably using the Computer as the player.
I think that Computers "Hands Down" are better Audio file processors than most Component Audio players. Their processing capabilities are much greater. PCs (by their nature) were never designed to have the same finesse as a piece of equipment dedicated to playing back music.
I love my PC for music processing. My pockets aren't deep enough to transform it into the type of "music player" I'm used to. This really isn't stopping me from enjoying my music.
As Dirty Harry might say (If he was into Computer music)... "A Computer's got to know it's place"

I know what you're implying, Steve, but I've never thought that this makes any difference. What "finesse" is needed to process the data? Go ahead and simplify the OS, run a low power Linux SBC like the Pi. But it's not like there are massive differences using a good asynchronous DAC.

Well I would have to disagree with you that "processing" & "playing" the data necessarily have to be tied together as the same step.
As far as Asynchronous DACs are concerned my least favorite DAC was one of these. For myself, I find that the DAC I'm currently using (a Metrum Hex) sounds quite different to me & never fails to just get out of the way of the music I listen through it.
I'm not sure if it's just a matter of personal preference, but there are somethings about PC Audio that I still view as shortcomings that I'd just as soon take another step or two using Component Audio where it's applicable. (& being an "Older Audiophile" my "Audio Equipment Budget" isn't nearly as "Healthy"as it was when I was spending it on "Metrum Hex" level equipment)
As I like to tell everyone... "Don't get Old"
