I only used my IPod on trans-ocean flights, but sound quality is still somewhat important. I can't seem to sleep using the in-flight audio system and those awful in-ear things.
So, a good battery is helpful. The hard disk storage is not that important: 100 or so AIFF files will get the job done.

I ditched my iPOD for a hires Korg which sounds much better but just as important is the control operation in the dark which doesn't suddenly light up brightly to 'stun' me.
Can you post a link? I can't find a hires Korg.
Korg MR1 using a ssd hd and plays hires. The newer Korg MR2 uses cards and is expensive.
There are many other players to choose from in a range of prices.
The MR1 is very good for air travel as the buttons are easy to use in the dark and the display doesn't bling you.
There IS something called a brightness control in pretty much all Apple products and most other similar products. Google it if you aren't able to figure it out on your own.
Abe,
Like Fred I modified my Korg with a SS drive. It sounds pretty good and can play and record just about any format.
That said I just updated my UPS drivers two iPod classics to SS drives and man these things are killer. With the larger battery and a less sucking (current wise) drive these things sound killer.
A bit of a bite to open, but there are kits and video's to do it. Ebay has a ton of 240g drives. You can find dead hard drive models on eBay for nothing and convert them and the battery lasts 4x longer.
My driver is going 4 12 hour days on one charge.
Thanks,

That's great news. We have two iPod Classics, one that is fairly old and the other was the last generation that they made. We typically used them in the car. I'll have to look into one of those SSD upgrades. Thanks.
Don't be silly. When you are in a dark aeroplane half asleep, you can't find it before it is too late. The navigation method makes it all the more difficult.
Anyway, compare to a Kord, the iPOD sonics suck.
Fred,
Some Ipods have great sound, just not in stock form. You have to go direct from the DAC. Here is a link, lots of good info online.

I just use the iPOD for air travel and often in the dark. I output to earphones only. This is the context of my post.
I do not think it matters if the lights are on or off. When the older one are modified one would use a portable amp to drive headphones. Not worth the work now as a allot of good sounding players are available.
Very important on a plane half asleep. Press button on iPOD, the thing lights up and 'blinds' you. Ahh....
I see...
Bob, to elaborate on your comment and link......
That mod is for the old HDD based iPod Classic. No need for such mods on newer iPods, iPads, iPhones that have the Lightning connector. That connector provides a digital output signal for driving an outboard DAC directly.
That's how I attach my iPhone or iPod Touch to my car's audio system. The other end of the Lightning cable has a USB plug which plugs into my car's USB port. The digital audio signal coming through the Lightning connector is fed to the car audio system's DAC directly..... completely bypassing the iDevice's internal DAC and analog stage.
Similarly there are headphones on the market that use the Lightning connector on the iDevice. Those headphones have their own built-in DACs.
Yes that is correct.
I think the 5th version and the Ipod Photo were better that some of the other old ones. I have a modded Photo put in a 240GB drive and it does sound very nice.
Lots of good portable players available now so probable not worth the trouble. As Gordon said they can be a real pain to get open even with the proper tools.

just use your smartphone? For me, the notion of using a dedicated music only player is obsolete. As for battery power, phone chargers are cheap and plentiful.
I use an iPhone 6S for that purpose while doing outdoor chores or traveling using Shure SE535 IEMs.
Because I don't own a smart phone?
Well some day, that flip phone will eventually give up! :)
Beam me up, Scotty! My favorite flip phone from back in the day. I still have it but the batteries are dead.
Here was my favorite. I still use it in the Bahamas each winter for emergencies. I keep $5 worth of minutes on it.

Nice. I'm not sure what it is but I want to say its the Motorola Razr, or something like that.
My first ever mobile was a Mitsubishi bag phone.
