After all these years, trouble: one of the amps has a distorted and very low volume sound.
When music is playing, the balance meter on that amp fluctuates wildly. All the tubes
seem to be glowing and look normal. I imagine that one of them is out of spec now.
Questions:
1. Is my conjecture likely to be correct?
2. Is this distorted signal liable to damage the speakers?
3. Should I replace the output tubes (I have a spare set)? Probably this is not worth trying myself, since there is no easy way to bias the output tubes myself. I'll probably have to find a tech.
Advice? Can't bear to be without music for long.
Follow Ups:
I'm an idiot...my daughter had unplugged the bias power supply cord.....hope
the speakers didn't get damaged....
I infer that you have ESLs and your daughter unplugged the speakers. Yes? If so, that was easy. Nope; don't think that would damage the ESLs at all.
Yes, I have Stax F83s. At one point a terrible sound (not loud) emerged, but
I hope you are right. Haven't been able to test yet.
