well, dumb. Guess redneck and ignorant though, is redundant. The Johnny Cash American Recordings is one of the most satisfying oeuvres of anyone I can think of.
His Sun Recordings are damn good. Most of his pre 1980 Columbia Recordings too.
The "outlaw" country guys are worthy, especially Willie.
Recently deceased Guy Clark was a helluva writer and singer.
Ditto Merle Haggard.
Females? Besides Patsy Cline there's Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris.
Lucinda Williams rides the line 'tween Country and... Americana.
Country is like any other genre, there's some mighty Good, PLENTY of Bad, and of course the obligatory Ugly.
The best of it is, in fact, Beyond Category (to use Duke Ellington's apt phrase).

I think you nailed it. Stay away from the pop country stuff and you'll be ok. "Americana" is a safe haven for country oriented artists that rebel against the current style of country. My most recent "country" find is the soundtrack from Hell or High Water. Produced by Nick Cave (!). Includes 5 or 6 gorgeous sounding outlaw country songs from the likes of Chris Stapleton, Waylon Jennings, Ray Wylie Hubbard and a new artist Colter Wall - his Sleeping on the Blacktop is an outright stunner imho.
Saw the movie and it was OK. But I agree, the soundtrack was outstanding. Picked it up right after.
Glad to hear it. Merle Haggard is the singer of Okie... and apparently Johnny Cash screwed his wife's sister, real nice folk. Gi Ha y'all. Sorry, I'm not in a real good mood lately for some reason. I guess not all country music is intolerant and moronic. Just deport the bad songs and singers back to Alabama. I'm sure some of the songs and singers are terrific. T
well just listen to the wind through the willows until it blows the wrong way and offends you.

Good point. I have stopped listening to a couple of people because of their behavior but you are right, if made a habit there wouldn't be much left but the wind. And boy o boy, the wind is a blowin the wrong way at the present time. Not the worse time to be deaf. T456

Unlike Dylan I fear there will be no answer this time. Only destruction. Buy hurricane insurance. T456
