One of my all-time favorite conductors. All his recordings on RCA and Columbia, in facsimiles of their original LP covers. (I'm a huge sucker for this sort of thing.) 86 CDs for $166 (shipped) from Amazon UK--not bad at all!

I'd buy it for the BSO, which early in Munch's tenure was one of the best ever.

As a youth, I was under the influence (should I stop there?) of B.H. Haggin, who was no fan of Charles Munch, and didn't really listen to many of his records (in fact, NONE, until some of his more well-known recordings were issued on SACD). I am more open-minded these days, and in fact, I am slowly collecting his Berlioz recordings. Toscanini got a lot of credit for his dedication to Berlioz, but actually only conducted a few of this works -Harold in Italy, Romeo and Juliet, and perhaps an overture or two, AFAIK. Munch was far more comprehensive, and really got around to everything except the operas, sometimes with multiple recordings.
What I love about Munch is that just about everything he did was always full of vitality and élan. There's a quality of uncontrolled abandon to his music-making that's really exciting. He excelled in the French repertoire, of course, and probably my favorite recording of his is the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony (the famous one with the BSO; his earlier NY Phil recording is also included in the box). For me, no one else comes close. All of his Ravel and Berlioz are great as well (I love his way with 'La Valse'). His recording of the Franck Symphony is very good. I also like his recording of the Chausson symphony (coupled with an electrifying account of Franck's 'Le Chasseur Maudit').
I think he's great in non-French repertoire as well. I love his Schubert 9th, Beethoven 3rd & 9th, and Tchaikovsky 6th (the Tchaik 6th that I imprinted on, and I think it still holds up well). Not that keen on his Brahms symphonies, though, but it's been a while since I've listened any of it, so I look forward to hearing them again.

As a lad in the 50s Dad would take me to Saturday rehearsals at Tanglewood. Usually Munch or Monteaux. Great memories

No, I haven't. I've heard of it, though, but I had never seen it in bookstores, and then I forgot about it altogether until now. I see it's available on Amazon pretty cheaply, so I might spring for a copy. Thanks for the reminder!

There are some real gems in there, with a lot of stuff never having been on CD before (e.g., that incredible performance of the Martinu Sixth Symphony AFAIR). Congrats on the score!
Will have to give it a listen on QOBUZ tonight!
Sadly, it's a DynaGroove, AKA 'DynaJunk'.
Dose that mean it sucks as a digital file as well?
Maybe not?
If the 'Nocturnes, L. 91: II. Fêtes' is any indication, and this one is in your box set, give it a listen and let me know your thoughts.
It sounds GREAT on Qobuz.
Just listened to 'Fetes' from the new set, and it does indeed sound really good--like other RCA recordings from that era (early 60's) do. It might be worth it to hear what improvements the 24/192 download might offer.

If I remember correctly, Dynagroove was geared specifically toward the mastering/pressing of LPs rather than the recording process itself. The master tapes (and the digital files made from them) should be fine.

That high a resolution might seem to be overkill for the older, mono recordings, but at least you've got to give Sony credit for releasing them that way in the first place. (BTW, the sticker on top of the box mentions that many of the recordings were newly remastered at 24/96; no mention at all of 24/192.)
Russell
The included book indicates that many of the recordings were indeed remastered at 24/192 (some of them are available on HDtracks and Acoustic Sounds as 24/192 downloads). Several others were remastered at 24/96, while still others used the DSD remasters (done for the SACDs).
Russell
as most of these recording were considered to be the best of their day.
Nice.$221 on US Amazon.
