RIP... Super talented and I hear a really nice guy. He was diverse and ALL over my collection.
In this day and age the label 'master' is given to sometimes too many not so deserving folks. But, if you call Toots Thielemans a 'master' you would have hit the nail right square on the head. R.I.P.
and shear magic on the harp.
Saw him live and met him once many moons ago.
Besides being an amazing musician he was a true gentleman (what an old sounding term)
and emanated a gracious spirit.
Rest in Peace.

A sad day indeed-
I have a recording of him w/ Dizzy Gillespie at Montreux-
that WILL BE IN HEAVY ROTATION TODAY....
Happy Listening

Don't have it. I was marvelling at his beautiful lines on 3 Views of A Secret from Jaco's Word of Mouth album just a few days ago. I also need to pick up the album he made with Elis Regina. I did pick up his first album as a leader on vinyl not long ago, from the 1950's I believe. When I saw him at the Detroit Jazz Fest he was playing duo with Kenny Werner, a very sympathetic partner.

is a personal favorite.
Toots trading fours with Pepper Adams on "East of the Sun" is one of many high points for me.
Also love that album with Elis Regina.
Its not one of Evans' best albums like those iconic trio recordings. But hey, Evans + Toots + Schneider is worth having.
Larry lived out here in the 80's.
I took one lesson from him.
I wanted him to show me some of his patterns and how to apply them, but he talked about rhythm almost exclusively.
Of course he was right!
Watching him solo with the 49er Big Band, at the games, he would kind of shake, you'd think he wouldn't be able to play.
Until he started playing...
He said his Mom always served Clam Chowder before his gigs.
Maybe that's how he never actually Clammed-
