Analog productions: RCA - Reiner/Prokofiev Lt. Kije, Gold CD or SACD, both are $30.00, any opinions as to which sounds most natural/true to the performance and venue? I have searched and read many reviews and from what I read the XRCD version seems a bit tilted towards the upper frequencies, so that appears be a non-starter. Open to other suggestions for this piece of music. The CD player, currently in use, is Not SACD capable, though that could change.
Thanks to all.
Follow Ups:
Was B side material on Ansermet's Pic's at Exhibition, a Decca Ace of Diamonds Lp, otherwise I would have never have stumbled across it. I don't know if the amazingly entrancing sound was caught on the above CD.
Anyway, it was recorded in experimental stereo in the mid-50's, it's a stunningly realistic recording (though not without a bit of congestion in the climaxes). IMHO Decca got better recording results than RCA.
The Paris orchestra is clearly having a blast. And Prokofiev had a little bit of a "French" side.
Both of these are fine performances in good sound. Slatkin has fine sound and an annjoying baritone soloist.
Leinsdorf's baritone was even worse than Slatkin's.
I wonder what the movie Lt Kije is like.
I never thought it was tilted towards the upper frequencies, but I'll listen again later today. It's worth noting that some of those Living Stereo recordings were tilted slightly towards the shallow side to begin with. As for the Analog Productions SACD's of the various Living Stereo recordings, I have only the first two of them (the Reiner/CSO Pines/Fountains and Scheherazade) and they were fabulous. Of course, that's not necessarily a guarantee that the Reiner Lt. Kije would be similarly fabulous.
As for other recordings of Kije, there's a MoFi SACD of the Vox Slatkin/St. Louis recording. I have it, and it's good (the remastering sounds especially powerful in the bass), but, overall, I like the Reiner recording better. One other recording I like is the 1993 performance with Fedoseyev and the Moscow Radio SO on the Japanese Canyon label. It's probably hard to get these days - Amazon shows it as unavailable.
Since this is AA, you'll probably get dozens of other recommendations! ;-)
The recent remasterings that Acoustic Sounds did of some of the famous RCAs are the best ever done. The XRCD is of an older remastering. It is still very good but the new ones are sensational, especially in vinyl.

Yes the XRCD is bright. I would get the gold CD. No sonic advantage to SACD. Same master. The new remastered vinyl is the best
