Scott Ross recorded the complete (all 555 of 'em) Scarlatti sonatas for
Erato, which was released in 1988.
Presto classical has 2 different 34 disc box sets of these recording, one
on Erato, one on Warner Classics. One cost about $75, the other about
$80, plus shipping, about $4.
Is there some reason to prefer one of these sets over the other? Also,
the review(s) of these recordings are glowing - are they in fact that
good? I have the Pletnev 2 disc Scarlatti recording which I like a lot,
and I would hope these by Ross would be at least as good.
Your opinions greatly appreciated.
(Recordings available from Presto Classical, which is having a nice sale
on box sets. I'm not affiliated with Presto)

BTW, he is, (or was)...how shall I say it?...one of "my" people?
You might want to explore single disc issues of Scarlatti on harpsichord before buying a box of 555 sonatas. One of my favorite Scarlatti players on harpsichord is Virginia Black:http://www.amazon.com/Scarlatti-Harpsichord-Sonatas-Virginia-Black/dp/B0012X2HRS
On piano, Maria Tipo is wonderful.

That's a LOT of Scarlatti. Ross's are the ones everyone points to but there's a new 3 CD set from Hantai on Mirare that's probably very fine. And 555 is a LOT of Scarlatti.
"In 1951 Fernando Valenti and the Westminster Recording Company of New York began work on an ambitious project, to record the entire set for the newly emergent long-playing record. Although the project ultimately ran to about two dozen records, alas it was never completed, with only about half of the sonatas making it onto LP."

I have about 100 of the Valenti LPs, and I like them as harpsichord performances of the sonatas. But you have to like his instrument, which is a massively loud piece of equipment that few harpsichordists would choose today. Here is a link to nearly 300 of his Scarlatti recordings, converted to youtube:

Some very nice ones on Naxos by various artists, a few of them have demo quality audio. I do not have all of them maybe 1/2 doz
Pletnev is on Piano ad competes more with Hamelin. Ross is Harpsichord. As for your dilemma, I bought the Erato years ago at a lot more $$$
Hamelin hasn't recorded any Scarlatti sonatas, so he's irrelevant to this discussion.
My absolute favorite piano disc of Scarlatti is Babayan, followed in no particular order by Horowitz, Tharaud, Pogorelich... and then there are many pianists who have included just a few sonatas as part of a recital disc, such as Perahia.
sorry, I was thinking of his Scriabin
I don't know which box set is better. I don't think you can compare Ross's straightforward performances to Pletnev's rather eccentric performances--they are two different animals. Plus Ross plays a harpsichord.
