Any fans of French singer Barbara around here?
Going through a bunch of her performances on YouTube.
She has a very French quality to her.
Any ideas of which, if any, English speaking singers compare in style?
Please don't suggest Nina Simone!

I had never heard her or of her. It seems to me that this about as authentically French as one could get.
Thanks!
I have all her cd's. she is unique, when it comes to songs with text the French are just the best.
Barbara had a supple voice which is impossible to imitate.
Some of her early recordings (mid sixties) are very well recorded
I even use some of them as demo disc. Barbara in your room is just something else.
Thanks for your reply.
Barbara had this haunting quality both in her writing and in her delivery. As a native French speaker I can tell you that her texts are marvellous pieces of poetry.
Cheers!
We always talk about the 3 B's
Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms
In France it is
Barbara, Brel, and Brassens.
There is just no equivalent in the English/American songbooks
.
WTF?
There was an earlier exchange that had a distinct "other-worldy" aspect to it. It was eliminated (he needed attention), but I wanted to ensure someone took the time to make a sound diagnosis and recommendation. ... there's only so many possibilities ... seems a reasonable bet. ;)
bjh is from Toronto, you will have to excuse him. He is one of my great admirers here, as is a certain genungo (see below).
Both gentlemen of the first order.
I'm extremely sorry If I've ever offended you in the least, Mr. Middle. Truly sorry...
I know that you would never intentionally annoy or offend anyone. And, I want YOU to know that I have complete faith in the integrity of your character.
Wow - a French singer with a "very French quality to her"...
What a revelation!
