Here's a country with a total population of 1.8 million - 278,000 Qatari citizens and 1.5 million expatriates. So of course they need a Philharmonic orchestra. And it was on the BBC Proms tonight with it's babe conductor Han-Na Chang. A young orchestra, and pretty enthusiastic by the look of it.Not bad at all. Plenty of energy in the 1st mov. of Rach 2 with Denis Matsuev, and that got a clap. They don't really do poetry, so the slow movement didn't really happen but they were back with the energy in the finale.
The thing that worries me is what on earth happens to all the instruments in the heat. Must be a nightmare for the strings. Maybe the hottest orchestra on earth?

Qatar- nice place. Thanks! for sharing.
I brought up this institution before.... It's a hidden gem in music-dom. The level of playing will make you forget that the orchestra is from the Middle East.
I guess the very same - she grew up a bit since the recording below recording was made. If I'm not mistaken, she appeared with one of our local orchestras here in the SF Bay Area when she was 11 or 12.
Han-Na Chang resigned from that post.
