I only have Kyung-wa Chung with Kemp from the 70s.
Can you recommend more recent releases by today's female fiddle players?
Hoping to find someone bold and confident rather than finelined and feminine.
Thanks.

But certainly a 'babe violinist' back in her day!
Streaming on QOBUZ as I type this.
YouTube third movement is below:
Try her other version.

2002, with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by her brother Myung-Whun Chung.

1974, with Bournemouth Symphony, conducted by Paavo Berglund.
Particularly the one with Berglund.Out of all the babe oriental players, by far my favourite is Kyung Wha Chung.
Like Mutter, she aged gracefully, too.

Baiba Skride, violin
NDR Radio Philharmonic, Hannover
Lawrence Foster, conductor
10 December 2010But if I were looking for a truly fine commercial recording, I'd opt for Gil Shaham, with Giuseppe Sinopoli and Philharmonia Orchestra, and I really like Milstein's recording. But, of course, neither of them passes the boobs and lipstick test.
I would recommend staying away from Janine Jansen and Leila Josefowicz.

Thanks for the reco.
Not familiar with Shaham but I like Sinopoli.
Baiba reminds me of young Mutter.
Sassy!
What is your objection with Janine Jansen's Bruch?
Ooops! It was a live performance. I guess she hasn't recorded it yet. But I'd go for Gil Shaham's CD, even though he doesn't have boobs.
"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
Gluzman!
Worth a listen, I think.
I just stumbled across Fritz Kreisler's performance of the Bruch Concerto......
This may be the definitive performance..... Albeit dated recording.
Even considering its historical sound quality, this is not a gutsy bold performance to my ears. ( more nebulous and loose )
And it can be yours for a mere $512.99 (plus media mail shipping).
Streaming it on QOBUZ and yes, it has an emotional depth that only Kreisler seems to be able to capture it this music.
so I will give it a listen.
Altho, I vaguely remember the name of conductor.
So no good enough babe fiddlers for Buch eh?
Another favorite is pictured above.
Also highly recommend his Korngold and his Glazunov.
.
but do try it.

"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
I checked out her other work on YouTube and her style of playing is lovely.
So thanks for that.
The Bruch is the first piece. I like it a lot. The rest is fun.
I'll probably go for her Bruch Violin Concerto CD.
Do you have it?
Yes. It's very good, and as Chris said, the Tchaikovsky is, too.
Nicola is a special artist, but I don't know her Bruch.
My teen (girl, trying to learn the piece) likes Sarah Chang 2 (two performances on yt--the one with blue green dress and NHK?, not w Levine conducting), but one of my faves is Zukerman w Israel, and Perlman and Oistrakh, but they are guys.
I don't like the performance of S Chang, feel it's too pressured and strained, losing some of the character of the piece. Agree with Todd K.
I agree, the style isn't for me.But she's sooo purrrdy.
I prefer Akiko 's Eye brows better tho.

Sarah Chang is somewhat of a "trick or treat" violinist.... And like a lot of renowned female performers, I thought she peaked in her late teen years, but kind of wore out after that. (She just seems effortless in her younger years. It appears that Sayaka Shoji might fall into the same trap.) I thought at one time she'd be "it".... But not the case.....
Sarah Chang was dynamite with the Mendelssohn Concerto..... Kurt Masur and the NYPO also provide an exquisite accompaniment.
She still had that total focus and confidence a child possesses.
Anyway, I am looking forward to hearing Nicola and Janine's Bruch.
What is your take on these players?
"What is your take on these players?"
Didn't care for either.... (Nicola Benedetti is near the top of my faves for babe violinists.)
The Bruch Violin Concerto is one of those works which women performers seem to have a hard time with.... Go figure (no pun) .....
The best "babe" performer I found that was a decent recording was..... Sophie Wang....
Lacks explosiveness of some others.... But has the lyricism, which the lack of IMO is a greater deficiency with this particular work.
Well, I've ordered Nicola, JJ and Gluzman ( ok, he's a bloke )
In general, I think there are more male professional classical musicians than female as this circle has been traditionally old boys club.
It's good to see that some gender busting going on but a conductor is concerned, it seems that there is still a way to go.
I don't know the Masur disc, but only know she had the two on yt. My teen likes her on this for some reason. We met her after her chamber music concert in Cerritos CA a few yrs back.
She is better looking live. And talks like my kid's friends and upper classwomen.
One of the best performances of this piece I know:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugMmPcY3yuc
Unfortunately not issued as a CD...
bold all right but missing some fun'n'flair.
Don't ask me why, but with the Bruch violin concerto, most "babes" sound as if they're choking the instrument..... I mean, even watching Sarah Chang play the final movement makes me cringe.....
After sampling about 15 violinists (including several of the wrong gender) this was a shot in the dark, but a young violinist named Soo-Been Lee.... If this is representative of her talent, we might have something special here. (She was only 13 here.) I think she'd pass the John Marks test. In flying colors. Her form looks near flawless to me.
(FWIW, I liked David Oistrakh's performance.... Doesn't happen often with this violinist. I think Itzhak Perlman is best with this particular work.)
Note, the recording quality of the linked video is not the greatest. Dynamically compressed. The performance has a piano (as opposed to orchestral) accompaniment, with some mistakes thrown in for good measure.
Don't ask me why, but two of the best performances on YouTube both have awful recorded sound........
(Warning, the violinist in linked clip is of the wrong gender. But might be the best violinist alive right now.)
I am usually good with low fidelity but this one is hard to take! :(
Can't make heads or tails out of her performance.
. . . I'm not sure it would really meet your requirement for "bold and confident". Akiko deals more in the finesse end of things:
BTW, if you check the booklet for this CD, you'll find that Akiko's hairdresser gets credited, along with the producer, engineer, program note writer, et al. ;-)
I also have JJ's recording from a couple of years ago which might be more to your liking (bolder than Akiko anyway) - it also has Bruch's Romance for Viola and Orchestra, a really nice piece which seems to be becoming more popular:
Although I haven't heard it, the reports I've read about Nadia Solerno Sonnenberg's recording of the Bruch (coupled with the Brahms Concerto) indicate that it's more of a slash and burn type of interpretation. However, I can never forget the review which appeared in Fanfare shortly after NSS's recording was released which asserted that her interpretation of the Brahms depicted "Brahms as a glop of congealed lard". (Apparently, Nadia's first movement is REALLY slow!) ;-)
Janine Jansen looks radiant.
I checked out Nadia Solerno.
Is this the CD?
Pushing over 50 so she's not really a babe perse any more, but I checked out her playing in YT. I kind of like her style.
What's your take on her?
Don't know how I overlooked her last night! (Too many babes these days!) The Tchaikovsky performance is also great, and Hrusa and the CzPO give her exceptionally energetic orchestral support too! And to add icing to the cake, DG is now providing much better SQ to their artists than they were years ago.Yes - by all means - go for Nicola!
EDIT: I forgot to attach a picture.

How aout Julia Fisher?
Altho, she looks to be like a cold fish.

I know this is a scandal, but I have not kept up with J-Fi's last couple of recordings (this and her all-Sarasate disc). (I did hear the Dvorak on Spotify - it was OK.) My bet is still on Nicola in the Bruch, although JJ would be fine too.
Interesting that there seems to be a slim pickins' for Bruch and female violinists.
With a picture of Brooklyn Decker pasted on the cover.
I know Heifetz rulz...
But I want a current babe violin player who can fiddle like Heifetz!
There is nothing wrong with Brooklyn Decker that I can see. ;)
