Any comments or recommendations about his recordings, especially of Bach?
Follow Ups:
I have his Goldberg too, and it is very fine (though pretty far from my favorite, which I just listened to this eve. : Murray Perahia on Sony sacd)
Koroliov did an excellent Shostakovich piano quintet (with Prazak quartet, on Praga label)
Google for hannsler/bach/koroliov. Didn't that label do all of Bachs works?
Did they have other pianists do WTC,English suites, etc?

His best Bach recording is The Art of Fugue IMHO, although he has recorded a lot and I'm far from having heard it all. Of the recordings I've heard, his albums on the Tacet label seem to have better SQ than those on the Hanssler label. I also have his WTC Book I on the Tacet, which I also think is very fine. On the Hanssler label, I had his Italian Concerto / French Overture recital, which I thought was just a bit brash, and I did not keep it.Of his non-Bach recordings, I have his Chopin Mazurkas, Prokofiev recital (Sarcasms, Sonata No. 5, etc.), Tchaikovsky Seasons, and Schubert 4-Hand Works (Fantasie in F minor and Grand Duo) - the latter with his wife, Ljupka Hadzigeorgieva, who also appears on some of the tracks on his Art of Fugue recording (although the booklet is maddeningly unclear as to which tracks those might be!). Also on the Tacet label, I have his Debussy Preludes on a DVD-Audio - recorded in such a way that the keyboard surrounds you over 270 degrees! It sounds gimmicky, but it's actually beautiful (although there are other very fine hi-rez recordings of the Debussy Preludes, such as those by Bavouzet and Aimard (the download anyway), recorded in a more normal way). All of these non-Bach recordings are excellent too - again IMHO. If I had to pick just one of them, I would probably pick the Schubert.

"with his wife, Ljupka Hadzigeorgieva, who also appears on some of the tracks on his Art of Fugue recording (although the booklet is maddeningly unclear as to which tracks those might be!)."Received his AoF from Germany this afternoon, and just finished listening to it. Marvellous! It seems fairly clear that he is joined by his wife in the two "encore" canons at the end of the second disc, which are for two pianos and four hands.
It is also entirely possible that she plays on the so-called mirror fugues, which seem almost impossible for one piano and two hands.

I think you're right - I looked at the album cover and booklet again and that's how I interpret it too. Glad you're enjoying it!
I just came across Koroliov's Bach and Chopin Mazurkas on youtube. What wonderful playing! How did I miss this thread?

Having played through both of the so-called "mirror" fugues yesterday (CPT 12 and 13), it is not physically possible to play all of the notes as written with two hands, even if they were Rachmaninoff's!
A first rate interpreter of Bach. In a respectful, thoughtful way - neither cabaret nor ponderous.

Highly recommended, if you like this sort of thing.
If I had never heard Glenn Gould's 1981 version, this would definitely be the one for me.

From Amazon review of his live DVD of the same work:
"I've known and loved Evgeni Koroliov's 1999 CD of the Goldberg Variations, part of the Hänssler label's ongoing series of Bach's complete works, since it was issued. It is notable for its unfussiness, it unfailing musicality, its sense of spontaneity, and its sonic clarity. Clearly influenced by Glenn Gould, Koroliov nonetheless alters his touch a good deal more than the Canadian, varying from Gouldian staccato to unfailingly clear legato; this adds to the palpable feeling of spontaneity. Bach's polyphonic lines are always easily heard. And a singing, lyical line is always present."
Agree completely, and with no humming! ;-)
Keith Jarrett.
