I admit that I would never have purchased this disc without the semi-rave review at Classics Today. I have never been a Rattle fan. I have always thought he was overrated by folks like Gramophone, and my discard/giveaway bin is littered with disappointing discs that were purchased with never-say-die hope knowing that the next Rattle release was going to be good (always the eternal optimist). Also, the sonics that EMI produced for Rattle/Berlin have almost always seemed thin.
Well, knock me over with a feather. This Bruckner disc is the real deal even without the fourth movement. Wide sound stage with some depth. Deep bass. Good dynamic range (but BIS is still safe :)). Decent strings and brass. The BPO is still a great orchestra.
The interpretation is strong and coherent. It hangs together. It makes sense not just noise.
I'm not sure about the newly constructed fourth movement. It will take some more hearings, but otherwise it is the most interesting Bruckner I've heard in a while. Anyone know of a hires download site for this?

I'd give him a try when I get to the *Bruckner phase*. ( Currently stuck at Schubert phase )
