That does surprise me. If this is the same cd your talking about ( see below link) .
I've just listened to the Weiss track that Gramophone has available to listen via there own player ( June 2012) and enjoyed both the performance and sound quality so much I'm about to order a copy via Amazon.
Does the Weiss sound as bad as the Bach on your cd?
Follow Ups:
I just listened to the Weiss and it is bad. I can not listen to this cd. The sound is definitely distorted. It is also mastered at a very high level. I don't know if that is a problem. I have 3000 cd's and a high quality system and I have never heard anything as bad as this. The sound is very gritty sounding, almost dirty if that means anything to you. A total waste of money.

might be interesting if you can to listen to the track via Gramophone's player. ( you need to create an account but its free and a great resource for a classical music lover) and see if it sounds better. Like I said I thought it sounded ok. Maybe they changed/processed it a bit?
I will create an account as soon as I have a chance and let you know what i discover
