I am always sad when May 18th rolls around. Mahler died on this date, and it always makes me pause to reflect. I am now almost the age Mahler was when he left. Scary.
I will be enjoying his music today, as I always do.

Follow Ups:
In honor, I spun Mahler's Symphony No. 1 this morning. I just received this great performance by Solti and the LSO on the 1964 Decca SXL label.
Hopefully you will be listening to Mahler lieder being sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who just died today (see above). I know I will be.

RIP Gustave Mahler. Indeed, taken at the height of his creative life. The world could've had so much more music had he survived.
And, so tragic in the case of so many other's who also, either at the height of powers [Mozart, Schumann, Tchaikovsky], or entering a new, powerful phase of creative maturity [Schubert], or in the midst of still completing their careers [Bruckner], were taken from us.
May their glorious memory live forever.
I hope all of you'll join me in taking a moment to remember these great artists on Memorial Day.
