Thanks for the encouragement. I've decided to make a bit more than a minimal effort as I just ordered the Julius Katchen box set of the Brahms Piano Works. If I cannot get into any of that, I should probably forget about his other chamber music.

Of just playing loudly and the passagework is often blurred. It just isn't good piano playing.

Excellent! Though I'd point out that his chamber music is more accessible than some of his piano music (which is really all over the place in that regard), and more universally admired (not entirely so, the quartets have their detractors). So if the piano music doesn't work out I suggest you try at least some of the chamber works, e.g., the sextets, which are in the "must hear before you die" category.
