I love a lot of the big band music I hear behind Sinatra. What album or album's have songs with the most upbeat tempos. I am not really fond of some of the ballad stuff. I'm looking for the songs where the band just smokes.
His discography is huge and I'm a little lost. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sinatra_discography
Thanks.
Follow Ups:
I own almost all of Sinatra's recordings:
1) The Complete Columbia Recordings
2) Frank Sinatra Concepts on Capitol
3) The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings
4) Frank Sinatra - The Complete Capitol Singles Collection
5) Sinatra in Hollywood
Played mostly would be (4) followed by (2).
Enjoy.
Sinatra made two studio albums with the Count Basie band on Reprise. The first of the two is my favorite, and I like it a lot better than the Sinatra at the Sands records. Fine recording, and Sinatra is in good voice. Most importantly, he seems very excited to be recording with Basie. It's my favorite Sinatra album.
1. I Remember Tommy (Reprise; Sy Oliver)
2. Nice 'N' Easy (Capitol; Nelson Riddle)
3. Come Dance With Me (Capitol; Billy May)
The band arrangements and sound are exceptional on all of the above. Try for an early pressing or the reel-to-reel tape versions.
Sinatra At The Sands. Oughta fill the bill nicely. Live and swinging.
And The Capitol Years Highlights also a great collection filled with essential Sinatra stuff. Can't miss.
Get this one on your choice of gold cd or lp for his absolute best on record. It isnt loud big band, but it is his best. For the big band get the Live at The Sands. The live in Paris disc is good for a small big band.
"sings the Select Cole Porter"
"Ring-a-ding-ding"
"Songs for Young Lovers"
"Wee Small Hours"
"A Swingin' Affair"
"Nice n Easy"
"Come Fly With Me"
When his voice was free of the arrogance he brought to it in later years.
Capitol.............I find the 50s Capitols to be his best work

Sinatra and Ellington. Simply astounding. And that goes for the recording too
take a listen. I appreciate all the suggestions.
"Sinatra at the Sands" is one of the better live recordings I own.

...there was a lot of that going on during his era.
Maybe if you could decide which specific songs you like, you could find them on an album.
My favorite is "The Reprise Years" because it contains many of his most famous ones.
Even though I'm 40, I have never really sat down and listened to him in earnest. I just generally hear him at different times and places. Occasionally I have heard something in which the band just gripped me, so I am now trying to track down some places to start. I want to get a few CD's and then when I find what I like, get some LP's.
I do have some Dean Martin, who I grew to love while listening with my grandfather.
I guess I always associate the crooning Sinatra with my grandfather's Perry Como, which I didn't like.
I think he's terrific up until about 1958, but after that he leaves me pretty cold. I'm less concerned with his voice's decline than his sensibility's demise. Mr. ring-a-ding-ding just doesn't do it for me. For his earlier stuff, the compilation called "The Voice" does do it for me. It's got fast stuff, slow stuff, and it's all good stuff. If you're a fan of the swinging Sinatra of later years, I can't help you.
I play "Sinatra Live at the Sands" at shows frequently. Count Basie cooks, smokes, swings and gyrates like no one else behind Frank. Sound quality is very good.
Other than that, the albums made for Capitol (most of them in mono) show Sinatra at his considerable best. Reissues are abundant and cheap.
I heard Sinatra live (with an all-girl orchestra) in 1981 at the Silver Slipper, Las Vegas. It was art singing of a high order.
I will check this out. I really like Count Basie.
