I was poking around eBay and found a first-pressing LP copy of Bob Ludwig's JMR cutting of Arturo Delmoni's "Songs My Mother Taught Me" that turns out to be the very early (from the first box, I would think) copy I personally inscribed to recording engineer David Hancock.
I of course knew that David had died some years back, but it now seems that his stuff has been sold off.
At the moment, it's for not-crazy money for this very rare and well-regarded LP; perhaps the fact that it is listed as "Songs My Father Taught Me" has something to do with that.
In any event, I am not going to bid, but someone else might want to.

JM
Follow Ups:
Without a story in the present. So many of the accomplishments and memories of the last centuries will be lost forever because of the corporate thinking of the present powers that be and their followers.
A change might be coming soon. We may have more to worry about than values of old sound recordings and similar cultural artifacts. Where are the Irish monasteries of our age, to save what we have learned for any survivors of an impending dark age?
John-
It looks like one of your records was well taken care of and will now go to an appreciative collector who will also take good care of it. A win-win.
But, with utmost respect to you, autographed LPs, or autographs in general, are not my thing, though I have a few. A violinist friend of mine has a wall where autographed photos of Ysaye, Heifetz, Kreisler, Thibaud, etc. hang. I don't think he has a John Marks, so maybe I'll let him know about the auction.

Hi-
You are right about the win/win, thanks.
When I said sad I meant a few things. One, it brought home David's death and absence as nothing else has. Two, the notion that no friend or child of his wanted it--perhaps there is no one left. Three, the notion that, some day, perhaps my precious mementos will be on eBay... .
Ciao,
John
First, thanks for the heads-up. We (as a community) appreciate it.
Second, "C'mon, man!!! I was bidding on that!!! THANKS!!!" just kidding.
I can definitely understand the sense of sadness in these things. I've bought used records and CDs that were signed by the artist to a person, with a small note of some sort, and I wonder why the person got rid of it.
One particular record comes to mind: I bought a classical piece and inside there was this sweet note from a mother to her daughter, thanking her for the visit and telling her that she couldn't afford much but that she knew the daughter really liked the record and wanted her to have it.
I didn't personally care much for the record, but the simple fact that it "did" mean something quite special to someone at some point made it difficult for me to get rid of. I've still got it.
It's weird how sentimental I get sometimes. And I'm a guy! Damn!!!

$53.00 at this posting....John, maybe you should be reissuing vinyl.
Tom
Thanks for your suggestion.
Given the collector value of the original JMR LP, and the fact that AFAIK its cover can no longer be duplicated in the US, for NM or NM- examples, I think that crazy is over $75 open and $150 sealed, of which AFAIK there is one in the world.
This particular one was inscribed by the label owner/record producer to the recording engineer, so I will not be surprised whatever the final number is.
