Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
I just received my MG12s a few days ago. I finally had a chance to sit down and do some critical listening last night. Well, long story short, one of the panels is rattling with high volume bass. I know they are not bottoming out, becuase I have heard that before, this is definitely a loose part rattling. If I get behind the panel and push on the magnet board with my finger the rattle stops. So, I think that the magnets may be loose. I would attempt to fix it myself, but I would have to remove the cloth, thus voiding the warranty.
Is this a common problem? I assume that Magnepan will fix it under the warranty, but I am reluctant to send them back. Has anyone else had to send thier maggies back for repairs? How quickly were they returned? Any insight into this problem would help ease my mind. Thanks.Steve
Remember, it's all about the music.
My left MG1.6 did the same thing about 1 month after purchase. It turned out to be the large inductor used in the crossover. I heard this has happened to others, so I felt through the cloth in the back area where the xover components are mounted, and sure enough 1 inductor was moveable beneath the cloth, and was rattling on every sustained low bass note at high volume levels. I hated to do it, but I waited too long to get the 1.6's to be shipping them back and waiting for repair, so I cut a 3 inch slit in the cloth to gain access to the inductor and used RTV silicon adhesive to firmly reattach the inductor to the wood panel in the same spot it had come loose from. Things have been fine ever since. Check em just in case.
Good Luck,
Bob D.
I'll be interested to see further posts on this thread. My subwoofer is somewhat behind one of my MG12s and it exhibits the same problem on certain recordings.
I've heard the same thing with a Sunfire sub behind an MG10 in a showroom. Once the panel wasn't in the direct line of fire of the active or passive driver, all was well.
