Danny doesn't seem to like series crossover designs. Danny often questioned the performance of VMPS speakers too, which also used series crossovers.
Follow Ups:
I think he would agree IN PRINCIPLE with 'Peter Gunn'.....about crossovers.
I'd like some input on how they look TO AN AMP......And compare with a standard 'parallel' cross type.
Too much is never enough
Danny posted the before (series) and after (parallel) impedance plots in his YT video.
Dave.
Can you summarize? If possible?
I used up my entire MONTHS worth of patience with nonsense when doing a search online at my coutnty recorders online records 'office'.
My search returned 226 PAGES of docs for the ONE day I was interested in.
Of course? My doc of interest was on PAGE 200......
My eyes were crossed and I had a headache......
Too much is never enough
The impedance plots start at 14.50 and runs for @ 1 minute.
Stock XO dips to 3.1 ohms at XO point. New XO has a rise at the XO point and has a slightly higher overall impedance.
One might think a rise could be problematic as well for the opposite reason as a dip.
ANY competent 4ohm rated amp can deal with either of the impedance 'curves'........SS best, maybe, but I still don't see much of an issue with Tube......
Tube amps may have a slight issue with the peak while SS I think will 'brush it off'....?
Too much is never enough
Summarize what?
Series or parallel, it doesn't make the speaker any harder (or easier) to drive.
Series crossovers will generally have a flatter impedance curve which might make them preferable for a high-ish output impedance amp.
The reason Magnepan has switched to series xovers is because the component values become somewhat smaller and can fit the narrow thickness of baffles better. Other than that, there are no advantages to series crossovers at all. The trade-off preference always benefits a parallel configuration......all other things being equal.
Dave.
I wanted a summary of the video-guys conclusions about the LRS and his change of crossover.
But I waded thru that part of the video.......I;m still working on a headache. I went to the SD county recorders office looking for something in particular. My search was narrowed to 226 PAGES. I plowed in and found what I wanted on Page 220, by which time I had a headache which I am almost recovered from.
but YOU were a big help. I can see why magnepan went in that particular direction. At the expense of having multiple input terminals, useful for biamp / biwire types.
Gunn was also a modder of crossovers. I've seen some of his work.....
