Follow Ups:
San Diego can thank LA for a good number of their homeless people; they collect a batch of them and places them on greyhound buses going our way. One-way of course.San Diego 'kind of' does the same thing; they have a program where they'll give a homeless person a free greyhound ticket home anywhere in the U.S. Their families first has to agree to receive them, and the homeless person agrees not to come back.
So I guess if they're from LA, they'll be riding greyhound forever.

It's really kinda sad. In Denver the cops were confiscating the possessions of homeless people in the parks. Many sleep outside because they feel the shelters are too dangerous. They get pushed from one location to another with no solution in sight. I don't know what the "solution" is but none of this is very humorous, especially sleeping outside in the winter.

Abe,
Part of what you describe is brought on by the fact that Denver has declared itself a "sanctuary city".
There is always a cost for these feel-good (and mostly meaningless) gestures.
Cheers,
SB
When you compare the list of sanctuary cities to the most populated cities your "feel good" suggestion is ruled out. Look up and see. Sure SF and others are lefties but Dallas and other cities are not.

Awe-d-o-file,
You provided a piss-poor example.
Just what do you know about Dallas?
Lefties? Nah! Think illegal aliens, aka "undocumented immigrants".
Just look up the demographics for the city (and not the surrounding suburbs) and you might find out why it's a "sanctuary city".
Cheers,
SB
Good thing JR's back in town.

Go to a shelter, take a shower, shave, brush teeth, get a free set of clothes, and go look for a job.
Those words coming from you.....First of all there are homeless people with jobs. Second of the homelesseople you have seen if shaven with some free clothes what percentage are stable enough to gain employment? You gonna hire them? McDonalds and Walmart wouldnt even hire them. Now tell us your solution for the homeless that are unemploable regardless if it is 1 or 50 percent of them....

BOOTSTRAPS! Why even bother asking him AWD-e? You know the answer. It's just that simple. If you are an inferior human being to 51 don't ask or expect any help from him, the filthy rich or anyone else. Why should the gobamint spend money on lazy, depraved homeless drug addicts when they can spend trillions and trillions and trillions on unnecessary war? The least the homeless can do is have the initiative to beg for quarters in cities with apartments going for over $1200-3000. Get some perspective Awd-e. T456

ET"Earl, I understand that you have compassion for homeless people. I do also. But, you have to recognize and accept that many of them simply haven't made the decision to pull themselves out of the mess they've gotten themselves into. If they're drug addicts/alcoholics, my observation is that those problems often/usually came AFTER the onset of their unhappiness with their life. Yes, I know this flies in the face of mainstream medical thinking.
Lastly, I noticed that your message contains several typing errors. Hopefully, that's not a sign of aging, but rather, sloppiness or being drunk. Pull it together.

This thread was about the comic I posted and his politically incorrect joke about homeless which is excellent! Nobody commented on it. Do you guys ever watch stand up comedy or like to laugh? I'm beginning to think I laugh at least 5X more than anyone here.
You guys hijacked it into a thread about homeless people. Stuff happens. I'm a bleeding heart on a personal level but less on a political level. YOU posed a solution and I simply wasn't surprised with your line of thinking and simply called it into question. So like I said what percentage of those homeless you see could go to a shelter, get clothing, go to interviews and gain employment? When people have a shaky employment history and other problems they seldom get hired even for shit jobs. We're on a similar page re the other comments you made except I think addicts are either born with brain chemistry issues, get it beaten in to them or have environmental issues, especially when growing up like addicts in the family. Well over 50 and as much as 75% of the population in the US suffers from one of these forms of addiction:
Drugs
Alcohol
Tobacco
Food
Gambling
Sex
and some others I missed
When you see a typo it's almost always when I use my little tablet which operates in Android and spell check would change things to words I didn't type and I had to disable it. I miss it adding apostrophes as you have to go to a different keyboard screen for those. This HP laptop I fixed has a new keyboard and it is very flimsy and prone to error compared to my friends old Dell I fixed the last day or two.
And I don't drink or mood alter in any way, just touch screen typo syndrome. I'm pulled together. With my big hands and that old $50 5X8 tablet I actually always preview posts, then edit, I must have forgotten.I am beginning to think I suffer from sometimers.

-drug addiction
-mental illness
often times both.
and we're talkin' the big league mental illness: Schizophrenia, psychosis, etc., Back in the good ole days a family member could petition a court to have a family member 'committed' and get help, but the ACLU convinced the US Supreme court to deem that unconstitutional (unless they pose a threat to themselves or others).
"-drug addiction
-mental illness
often times both. "
10-4 on that.
Mental illness, in particular, can be hard to diagnose. As a highly evolved species, humans have all sorts of issues, unlike simple insects or rodents which have only one or maybe four things to do.
:)
Yup, that's the hard line view I held for a long time. I still do in some cases but it's not that black and white simple for some folks who are down on their luck.
It is that black and white simple, if you're a simpleton.

Abe-
at least 50% of this population is "homeless" under his own volition.
The real travesty are the States that tolerate this non-sense and put honest, everyday, citizens at (dangerous) risk.
It's not "hard line", it's cold-water-in-your-face reality, but I do understand what you're saying.
On the other hand, "down on your luck" is often a cop-out. More often, in my observation, is that a person is unhappy with their life and turns to drugs or alcohol to sedate themself. It spirals downward from there.
.
Jeez, now I'm getting depressed again!
:)
