A bit of fun for less than $30,000?
Edits: 08/23/16Follow Ups:
If you do NOT like buying a Subaru, you can always buy the EXACT same car from Toyota.
Minor trim / badging differences and MAYBE suspension calibration, too. But for the $$? Can't beat 'em.
Too much is never enough
But two seaters have higher insurance rates by a good bit as I recall.

Sorry, but I had too many relatives who were determined to "BUY US made" get screwed by the Dodge/Chrysler K-Car line to EVER give a rat's ass about supporting the US auto manufacturers EVER again.
If it is made here in the good old US of A? Fine. Otherwise? I shop & point others towards the best vehicle for the purpose/budget.
The K car was generations ago.Cars have improved dramatically since then. While our country keeps going down the shitter because of that kind of thinking, people can no longer say freedom for all especially when we can't defend ourselves as a nation as we could in WW2 when we built the war machine for the allied forces..While we continually close up and move industry and jobs to Mexico and China,we will eventually be taken over by China and Korea as they now have the industry and ability to do what we used to do. Sad!I also don't buy the quality thing as the reason for our demise.I never heard of RCA and Zenith, and Magnavox as being bad stuff but now those companies are gone while Sony still thrives.People need to wake up.

The US did not get on or join the modern quality revolution which was pioneered by an American but put into practice to good effect by the Japanese.
W. Edwards Deming was one of the early pioneers who didn't get a lot of traction in the USA but was welcomed overseas.
His ideas morphed into modern TQM = Total Quality Management
And that's why US cars sucked for such a long time. And might still today.
Too much is never enough
And I was impressed. I always liked the nimble handling of compact Japanese cars and this Impala was larger and yet just as nimble.
I'm wondering whether they are reversing roles?
I love manual transmission cars and who knows, when I have no more family, I maybe can justify a two-seater.
Literally, music CDs. They don't pirate like the Chinese. Our TVs are made in Korea. At least, these countries are not over populated and underdeveloped, so it is like trading with Europe. Don't you like BMWs?
Then use your shareholder vote to stop those companies from offshoring. Tell them that the American worker is more important than increasing profits year on year. If I buy American, those companies will just use the profits to fund more offshoring, or a fancy new robot to replace even more American workers so they can increase those profits. That's really how greedy they are. Please don't lecture about how individuals spend their money. Take it out on those American manufacturers. They are the ones that have far more control over job loss.
You won't get any argument from me.As a conservative,I think NAFTA was the biggest disaster that every struck our country.Apple is the largest company in the world at any given time and they build everything with child labor in many cases as does Microsoft..Tim Cook says he will not bring Apple's money back to the US until we have a more competitive tax rate. As far as lecturing,Japan is a price dumper as is China and now Japan's economy is in the shitter..The people in those countries love American products but we can't even sell our products in those countries because of protectionism. We should pull the same crap until they start to change.

With a Global economy.. No big country can really afford to have a major war. All those companies selling overseas will lose out, jobs lost, economic ruin.
Plus the economic pressure others have due to money..
In the short term, the USA may have suffered. But we may yet win in the long term. Particulary in the environmental areas.
I do agree the issue in in each Americans hands. Who they buy from.
Most countries are very nationalistic. We seem to have very little economic sense of who makes anything. It is all price.
I (almost) think the average American would sell their own Mother to save a dollar.
I (almost) think the average American would sell their own Mother to save a dollar.
You are't just a kidding. When I went to out to buy my gas grill,I could have gotten a decent made in China grill for about 250 dollars at that time.I ended up buying an American made CharBroil from our Local hardware store for 600 dollars but it was made like a commercial grill. It is going on nine years old and it looks almost as good as the day I bought it.
On the environmental front, we are winning due to better conditions for workers but the problem is,65% of the new jobs in the US since 1999 have gone to immigrant workers..I'm not talking illegal.I realize that many can't afford American made products anymore on the wages being paid and the only way it will come back is if these 3rd world country's workers start demanding a competitive wage. Personally,I don't think its labor wages that drive companies to move overseas.I think it is excessive regulation and potential litigation.Taxes, regulation, and potential law suits is why so many are leaving.

Those jobs are, as you said, going to H1B visa workers. American companies lobby the hell out of Congress and the Aministration to increase the number of and increase the ease in obtaining those visas. Those same companies claim they just can't find qualified American workers to fill those jobs. Bullshit is my reply. By "qualified" what they really mean is they can't find Americans willing to work for the paltry wages they want to pay. They can also just shed those H1B employees with no severance or pesky unemployment compensation restrictions. Just send them back where they came from, taking their piece of our wealth with them. I don't blame the workers as they're just trying to make a living like anybody. I blame the companies. The really stoopit thing is we let them do it over and over again. Seemingly, every time there is serious talk about curtailing American corporate addiction to cheap imported labor, you here how it will make those corporations uncompetitive and kill jobs. Again, I say bullshit. It's all about the money. Corporations have neither an ass to be kicked, nor a soul to be saved.
Maybe we have some common ground other than cats and music?
I agree with you.People want the most for the least and that goes for everyone. We took my mom to the emergency one time and this was back in 1998.
She was having some pain which later turned out to be an internal muscle spasm. We sat there almost six hours asking why it was talking so long for the radiologist to read the X-Ray.Their response was,we sent the X-Ray to India to be read.I am not kidding.

THree model options:
ST (ST1) same fabric seats as 'sport' regular Focus. no bells and whistles.
ST2 gets some options and partial leather two tone Recaro seats
ST3 gets full leather black Recaro seats, Nav, HID headlights..
All have the same 2.0 liter 253hp turbo engine.
6 speed manual gearbox. (NO option for an automatic on ST)
If I drive easy like a normal car I get 32mpg. This is staying off the turbo
On turbo the car is a pocket rocket.
Either way the car goes around corners like a racecar..
If you like a manual transmission car.. The Focus ST hatch is worth considering.
The BRZ is also an interesting car.. I never test drove one though.
They are contemplating a dual clutch auto for 2017 as well. They did a thorough job with the Focus and it's a well rounded car.I did get to drive the ST but I'm going to Ford proving grounds the 3rd week in Oct and I'm anxious to get to test a couple models and the ST being one of them..I'm going down for the ASSET service program as we may be adding it to our auto tech curriculum. Then I can give it a track workout.I wanted to drive a Ford GT when I was there in 2006 and of course they wouldn't let us near the track with it.LOL

If you're buying new, wait for the 2017 Toyota 86 to compare. The BRZ and Scion FRS resulted from a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota. Toyota is switching their version from its Scion brand to Toyota. I expect the fit and finish, including interior materials, to be a little better in the Toyota and early reports say hp and torque are bumped up a little. Pricing for the '17 Toyota 86 was recently released. It still starts in the 27K range.
Great advice, thanks.
Okay. If you think like a collector, then consider this: 2016 Scion FR-S Release Series 2.0. I think the intent was to take the interior to near-luxury levels, but It turned out outlandishly cool, depending on one's taste. That interior is an attention grabber. The 2.0 has a unique paint color. It's subtle compared to the interior. It grows on you. Only 1000 produced. Your number's on the dash (outlandishly cool?). I saw one at the dealership where I get my oil changed. If it's there next time, I'm going for a test drive.
A possible alternative unless you must have just two doors.
looks like a entry sports car. Subaru has a established fan base. I am not a fan of Boxer motors, but it is more sound related than performance related. I usually recommend not buying a first year new model car. Seems there are usually bugs that need to be corrected with them.
World of difference in performance. If you can get over that funky hood design.
You should try both out. Good luck!
Ppl I know say handling is nimble. Engine doesn't rev like a true sports car. Many add aftermarket exhaust to alieve some of that issue.
A very fun car! Not a lot of horsepower, but a lot of "stick" to make up for it. It sits very low so if that is an issue seek something else. But if you are looking for driving fun in something a little bigger than a Miata, this is your car.
"The only obligation you have in life is to get through it, everything else is man made and bullshit".
More interested in good, quick handling characteristics in a fairly economical and reliable package.
The Miata idea also sounds interesting.
Unless you put a small block in that Miata most car guys will think you are gay.....just sayin
Interesting as to why this might be though. I don't bother to categorize things that way but I can understand why others might. In some parts of the country at least, ANY compact car is considered to be a "girl car" and/or a "gay" car. Hey, if a man can even fit inside of small car, he is suspected of being gay or at least a wimp of some sort!
And while it might be true that gay men SOMETIMES seek to identify themselves by consciously following certain fashion trends I think you'll find that gay men nowadays drive all sorts of vehicles.
I'm not gay but I'm so far out of the mainstream in my ways of thinking that little or nothing that is "normal" matters much to me. For the most part, I've been driving small and nimble cars for decades and I'm not going to stop anytime in the foreseeable future.
Big cars have their place too but I'm definitely more of a minimalist when it comes to anything related to the oil and gas industry.

Ah go all out..Get a Shelby Mustang and enjoy life or even a Z28. This is 2014 but it's hard to argue with.

I have driven both and they are lots of fun. If you like old English sport cars take the Miyta. If you want something a little more "subdued " take a look at the BRZ.
If you can find a road race country club in your area, stop by. You will notice a lot of Miyatas! Very good handling and a lot of fun for relatively little cash. And lots of people use them for weekend racing. All kinds of Miyata clubs in my area.
