Sheesh!
Follow Ups:
Seems we just love to crush people when they are down. Anyone who is any sort of success, if they have a bad moment, or make a small mistake.. we LOVE to jump on them and kick them again, and again, and again, while they are down.
It is like a national phenomenon.
I do not know why.. Jealous? mass hypnosis? Mass media frenzy?
Anyway it always happens. And in a few weeks few will even remember his name.
IMO he likes to 'confabulate'. Which is he mixes up reality with his own fantasy. So his first mistake was he told his Mother his mash up story. Who really messed up and blabbed. Then he tried to cover his ass, Which was his second mistake.
If his Mom had kept her mouth shut.. Nothing would have happened. He never would have made a police report. And no one would care.
Actually, we'll take whatever we can get.We spend hours a day watching Reality TV shows featuring ALL sorts of people getting caught red-handed while committing various sorts of misdeeds, being embarrassed, going to jail, etc... So it's not not just the "winners" that we are after - although a touch of glamour never hurts.

That was not a 'small mistake', it was huge!
Olympic athletes have an ambassadorial role and represent their country (and in these days of professionalism their sponsors) publicly and to the whole world. He could have done that at a national meet and it would just have been between his mom, him and the garage but this was the Olympics and other, much stricter rules apply.
Globally he simply reinforced the prejudicial picture of the 'ugly american'.
But you seem to be ok with that...
This reminds me of a couple things.
One is the kid who committed vandalism in Singapore and they wanted to cane him, which is a sever form of corporal punishment. Pressure was put on and they didn't, but I think if you go to other countries you behave yourself. If I was the Singapore government I would say "OK, we won't cane him, we'll just give him two years in prison where he doesn't know the language, is not used to the food and will likely have little or no outside support or visitors. Might also have trouble making friends in there because those people are extremely clean. You can go to jail for spitting on the sidewalk and most of the agree with that. They don't want to track your spit into their home where their kids play on the floor.
I do NOT agree with what happened to that Woman in Dubai who was jailed for drinking after reporting being raped. From what I understand you can drink in those countries but only in private. I do think though that she shouldn't even have been there. I drink beer, I will never go to an Arabic or Muslim country.
This caning thing might be a good idea for certain crimes. It does not take alot of time and you do not have to house and feed them. It just has to be severe enough to be a real deterrent. It has to be severe enough that the if asked whether they would take the caning or prison they would take prison, but don't give them the choice.
People do not know when to stop. The dude fucked up and went to court in Brazil and bought his way out of it. If he would have simply owned up to it there would be less trouble, but he tried to lie his way out of it. Like this (ex) buddy of mine, stole money from his boss and tried to say someone broke in. He should have just said he lost it so take it out of the paycheck.
All this reminds me of a joke.
She : If I died today would you remarry ?
He : No
She : You should, I want you to be happy
He : OK I would remarry after a while I guess
She : Would you sleep with her in pour bed ?
He : I would probably get a new bed
She : Would you let her drive my car ?
He : Not really sure
She : Would you golf with her ?
He : Yes
She : Would you let her use my clubs ?
He : No, she is left handed
Handling adverse situations is something alot of people do not have. Another (kinda ex) buddy of mine was illegally dumping when the cops showed up. Cop asks what are they doing here and he says "Picking this shit up".
People who cannot think on their feet should not do wrong things.
And someone mentioned this guy's academics ? No school teaches anything that would have helped him in this incident. Damn, people are stupid. And getting stupider. I haven't played chess in at least a decade but I bet I am getting better by the minute.
If he told mom the truth she wouldn't have told "the story"

TV Comedy. Commercials. A TV series perhaps. Bit parts in full length feature films if he's lucky.
There might be a way forward for him if he can capitalize on his stumbling, stupid nature be it real or perceived.
As soon as he starts dating a Kardashian...
8^)
Only one person to blame and that is himself for first doing stupid and immature things in Rio, and then lying about it.
Funny, how he needed to report to his Mom, everyday. And because he missed that one day (due to bar time)... he comes up with the crazy story.
It was his Mom that first reported it. Correct?
After all the attention, there have been a number of videos of him shown. He is one big dumb dude. Must have invested all his time into swimming and not getting a education, or he has a mental condition that limits his reasoning?
Idiot aquvant
A perfect case of entitlement and being fawned over for his entire life. What Ryan really needs is someone to kick the shit out of his sorry ass. Has anyone heard this guy "try" to string a sentence together? As educated as a rock!
Being a guest in Brazil and representing the USA, you would think this complete asshole would try to act respectful but I guess that is asking too much.
I hope he ends up homeless and bankrupt, but Im sure " Mommie" will take are of her precious little boy.
"The only obligation you have in life is to get through it, everything else is man made and bullshit".
Sometimes what people post describes themselves instead of the person they're criticizing. Look in the mirror lately?
Angryaudioboy? Gee buddy nice moniker. How much brain power did you waste to come up with that? Bet I know who your sorry ass is!
So what is it like to waste your fathers money on an education that you never used? Thank God for a trust fund huh? It's the only reason you my friend are not homeless or in a "home".
"The only obligation you have in life is to get through it, everything else is man made and bullshit".
Nop, guess again. A while back some of your ex-friends talked about your temper and self importance. I didn't want to believe them but your posts prove it. The moniker choice was easy. Get over yourself and Mommie. Man up!
You are 100% correct. I have been angry and pissed off for as long as I can remember. I can only assume the ego comes along with it. I wish I knew what I was so pissed at, I really have no idea.
Whole lot of unloving, very funny but you also put down a good speaker manufacturer who had nothing to do with this. Everything about me personally in " my system" I am trying own.
I am not a very nice person. But I am going to try and better myself. Too late for you guys but still time to give it a try.
I hope your travels in this life gives all of you nothing but peace.
Again, you are right. I have been an insufferable asshole to each and everyone of you. I am sorry.
"The only obligation you have in life is to get through it, everything else is man made and bullshit".
Looks like you took your ball and went home.
The guy doesn't strike me as being overly intelligent. Ever heard him speak? Whenever he speaks I have to stop and remind myself that he's not Jeff Spicoli from "Fast Times At Ridgemont High".
...as I've seen him called in a few headlines.
That jackass could have made a living doing nothing but collecting checks for wearing sponsors clothes.
Well, he can always teach swimming at a day camp.
