$85, fingerprints, your passport, and 2 weeks will get you the magic number to bypass the horrendous backups expected at major hubs. Well worth it. If your have seen the lines at SeaTac, O'Hare, Kennedy, etc, you will know what I mean. Lots of folks flying this summer due to cheap fares, but TSA has fallen behind the curve for hiring and training.
Pre-checking gets you into and out of way shorter lines with way less hassles. Be patient, keep your cool, allow more time than you thought you needed -- or get that pre-check deal done.

Just a bit of levity. It's all good. Going from Orlando to Dallas for Memorial Day weekend, so wish me luck y'all! :-)

I've gotten pre-check clearance several times, apparently just because I used frequent flyer miles for the ticket. I don't fly very often, but I have a credit card where I get a mile for every dollar spent. Sure, it costs me an annual fee, but I don't have to give the entire government my fingerprints, AND, I get a mile for every dollar I spend on frivolous stuff.

Introductory type program given out to certain people with certain profiles.
No more gravy. Pay or get in line.
Interesting. I think they should continue it - it's a successful program. 'Course, it's the gubment, and they manage to kill any program which makes sense.
American Airlines Terminal 3 at O'Hare is awful, with a capital "AWFUL", when it comes to TSA screening. When I was there in April, there were at least a hundred people in line. Really, they can't figure out how to expand their "services" to better accommodate people, while the administrators are making bonuses? SERIOUSLY?!
:(
I guess long lines are more worrisome than being able to " get fake weapons and explosives past security screeners 95 percent of the time in 70 covert tests."
WASHINGTON - Facing a backlash over long security lines and management problems, the head of the Transportation Security Administration shook up his leadership team on Monday, replacing the agency's top security official and adding a new group of administrators at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
In an email to staff members, Peter V. Neffenger, the T.S.A. administrator, announced a series of changes that included the removal of Kelly Hoggan, who had been the assistant administrator for the Office of Security Operations since 2013.
Beginning late that year, Mr. Hoggan received $90,000 in bonuses over a 13-month period, even though a leaked report from the Department of Homeland Security showed that auditors were able to get fake weapons and explosives past security screeners 95 percent of the time in 70 covert tests."

but one could argue that a 95% "miss rate" for 'fake weapons and explosies' may be OK.
What was the miss rate for REAL weapons and explosives? I think that's the more cogent question.
;-)
all the best,
mrh
but (not surprisingly) that data hasn't been released, or leaked!
Not yet.

+1 on that!

I hate the cattle cars of today, but then I was spoiled in the old days when the airlines treated you like a paying customer.

...negates long TSA lines and 2 bags free.
And true enough, times and treatments have changed, but keeping the bigger picture in mind, you can fly halfway around the world in a day. That has to be worth some hassle. And no one has blown up or hiijacked a US plane in a long time. Just don't speak Arabic or do differential equations when on board
Try Southwest. Free bags (2).
I was unaware of the $100 baggage charge and could not find reference to it with a WWW search.
Is the $100 a per flight charge?
I flew a lot from 2009 to 2012 and was pulled aside everytime for a thorough pat down, so doubt I would pass the $85 test.
Not a clue as to why I'm on "a list" and a friend who could run me and find out why said that running such a search would send up a flag just making matters worse.
As far as the TSA goes, I once came close to being grounded from a flight due to a clear plastic bag of quarters ($9 of the USA 25 cents ones) being present in my carry-on.
The TSA agent demanded to know "what are these?", to which I replied "are you a moron, or what?".
