Over the past 5 years, 3 people left my company. They dumped the work on me. Finally I had it up to over the the top of my head and let my clueless pointy haired boss know how I feel. The guy under the C.E.O. heard it too so looks like tomorrow will be my last day after 14 years. They really need me more than I need them and my head cut off could cost at least 100,000,000 dollars in decreased sales.
No compensation and I had kept my head down and grinned throughout those years so I said either hire more people or fire me.
Sucks for my ex. Team if that is the case but you reap what you sow.
If I do get fired tomorrow I will take a long needed break for about a year until I start looking for something else to do with my time. I stacked enough gold and cash to keep me good for 9 years without work. I am 38 . still got a few working years ahead of me.
Follow Ups:
I am still working. However I am much more paranoid about the deep company , sort of like a deep state as it is called.
Either way I'll just keep stacking.
Well, that's good! Hang in there!
"Hire more people or fire me"
You're not fired. You haven't quit. So they're hiring more people?
They hire a lot. Company expands and compounds the expansion every year.
I think I am good. It is a 1970s company, so the vibe is good. Lots of acid heads running things,
Thanks all for the good vibes.
I got so sick and of being fired that, 30 years ago, I decided not to look for another job. I figured what for? I'll just get fired again.
:)
Don't be surprised if you see a sombrero hovering over your desk when you return.
Stockpiling money; pissing on their infrastructure. This is what brought in unions. I guess memories are short.
Good for you. More people need to speak up. Corporate America's productivity increases are a direct result of less people doing more work. My wife works for a large international corporation as a system administrator. They constantly "release" people and then assign those duties to her. She can be called at ant time (and they do). She puts in an average of 55-60 hour per week. When we went to Hawaii a couple of weeks ago her boss told her to take her phone and laptop. She finally worked up the courage to say no and her boss relented.
At least you have prepared yourself for a time without employment. Good luck and enjoy the time off.
And when the Obama Admin wants employers to start PAYING people on 'salary' who are working 60 hours per week, you'd think a 10 mile diameter ASTEROID was heading for Earth.
When I worked, SALARY people who really put in a lot of extra time were given 'comp' days. Just don't show up!
In California you have 3 categories of employ. Salary EXEMPT. Salary NONexempt. HOURLY.
I was Salary Nonexempt, got paid hourly and had a few other bennies. Nothing special and I could be fired easily since California is an 'at will' state.
One company in the Semiconductor industry was known for giving an employee a MONTH off with pay after 10 years employ. This in addition to regular vacation benefits.
Me? When I quit, I had about 500 hours in my vacation bank.
Too much is never enough
Get ready for the 10 mile diameter asstroied. It's call the Donald asstroied. Better duck. Tweaker
I never worked for anyone more than 5 years, maybe, more like 2 or 3.
Well, not quite, I've had my current job since 1991. Wow, 25 years!
If I wasn't the boss, I surely would have been fired long ago.

You're lucky in the sense that a lot of companies (Qualcomm being one of them) are forcing the older guys (most nearing pension) to TEACH the newer, younger guys their job and then are forced into unemployment. I say forced because they're making them sign confidentiality statements promising they're never discuss this process or else risk losing the meager severance packages they're handed. And if that weren't enough, the newer crop of employees are generally folks from other countries that are paid substantially less AND will have to carry the weight of two (sometimes three) employees who were 'let go'.
Something more for the millenniums to complain about.

Don't sweat it. It's done. When you found this job you were looking; Right?
Most people go through four to five major career moves before they retire. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't fire you, as a little "truth" and "clearing the air" is necessary from time to time.
As we used to say back in the day; "Fuck 'em and feed 'em fish heads".
Be at peace with it.
Meat; It's the right thing to do. Romans 14:2
Thanks, the boss basically said the great work wasn't important, but talking about it is. I do the great work.
Also, no kids or wife, I am good for awhile.
Fuck them in the ass.
We are the same.
Less people expected ... no, demanded, to do more work.
Good for you to speak up.
Cheers,
John K
