This is not new. I worked at a Ford dealership from 1979 - 1984. The owner had a Lincoln MKIV (IIRC), about mid to late 1970's vintage, I can't remember exactly, but I recollect that it was one of the Bill Blass editions and was blue with a white leather interior.
Anyway, it was equipped with one of those electronically defrosting windshields. A very expensive part, it was said that the glass was impregnated with powdered gold which allowed it to conduct enough electrical current to create heat. The car was equipped with two alternators, one was the standard 12v variety, but the other was rated at 120v (IIRC) and was solely intended to power the electronically defrosting windshield.
I remember that in 1982 this windshield was broken by a rock thrown by a passing truck. This gold impregnated glass was becoming hard to find by that time. We finally located one, but the cost was over $900, not including freight. That was a lot of money back then.
That started in the 80s on the Taurus. Expensive to replace the ws if it needs it. Dont drop your comp coverage.
