The plus for me with the Beretta 92FS Inox is it comes in all stainless. $675 list. (I like stainless a lot, and this is the only all stainless on my short list)
The CZ75 SP-01 is also good with lots of options, at $680 list.
The Baby Desert Eagle III (importing new this month) main downside is small scale import. Otherwise a contender.
I will try to see if any of these three are at the range to rent.
All other 9mm best contenders seem to be NOT all steel body.
I want the heft.
So.. any opinions..
Seems guns have the opinions just like audio stuff has. Brand loyalty, bad service/good service memories.. LOL
Plenty of positive reviews for the Beretta and CZ. All three are imports, but the Baby Desert Eagle does too. But unless I find out they have spectacular service, I probably will pass just due to the theoretical 'small scale' problem.
Follow Ups:
I generally prefer 1911s but I do have a Beretta M96, which is of course a 40 rather than a 9 but I love that thing. I don't think you'd regret getting the Beretta 92, especially since it is available in stainless, which you'd like.
I have a Kimber Pro Carry II (stainless) which is my normal "carry" gun. I usually open carry but when I want to conceal I opt for a Smith & Wesson model 36 (mine is nickel plated, 2" bbl) or a Walther PPK. I can conceal the 1911s in the winter though. As I said, I normally open carry just about all the time (its generally no hassle in VA).
I do however carry the Beretta M96 sometimes. Just depends on the situation. The Beretta is the only sidearm I have with the Crimson Trace grips. I love it. The wife got it for me for Christmas a few years back. :-D
I strongly encourage you to follow your instinct and see if there are any ranges with rentals available so you can try one of them before you plunk down your $$. Perhaps if the range doesn't have/rent what you want to try before you buy, one of your friends may have one and accompany you the range for a try out.
And finally, your last point about service is to me incredibly important. That's something that many people don't even think about when making a purchase. I don't understand that, but, that's the way it is.
There is no such thing as better customer service than that which is provided by Ruger. Kimber customer service is also very good. Both of those brands are so good that you'd likely not ever need service, but if you did..................
I've never needed service for either of them but the few people I know that have, told me that it was easy and hassle free. Additionally, in the also unlikely event that you would need service for a Beretta you would likely find that to be hassle free too.
At any rate, I wish you happy shopping. And happy shooting.
Please, BE SAFE.
cheers,
roN
I was surprised how much more the Beretta 9mm kicked than the CZ. Like 30% more in my impression. So it was a major difference. The CZ i did not really notice the recoil at all. The Beretta I did. (Kind of like the difference between 38P+ to .357 from the same wheelgun).)
I also liked the fact i could blow 15 shots as fast as i could with the CZ75, and they were all in (medium) area of the target I was aiming at. This is 15 bullets in a few seconds. The Beretta.. not happening. It took too long to get it back on target.. Hey, it matters.
The CZ sights were wayyyy off. But consistent, so just a minor problem with an abused rental pistol.
Both racked easy. loaded the magazine easy. (I made a homemade stick to assist loading the magazines. Really worked well!) I am getting better at both racking and loading magazines. The first time I tried a few months ago. Damn, it was impossible with some guns. Then I read HOW, and with practice it is now easier.
So I think a CZ75 B or SP-01 is in my future.
I was just there shooting my Ruger MKiii 22. 250 rounds in 40 minutes. All my shots in a 5" at 50 feet. (and this with being half blind needing new glasses LOL) It was hot so I quit shooting early.
(I like shooting almost for free, get free range passes with purchases, I own 37db hearing protection and the guns, so just ammo and targets.)But I also picked up my new SIG P238HDw stainless 380 semiauto. I had to order it, but it is a nice gun (I tried one on a range) and I knew it would be good.
Very small, but shoots well. plenty of variations, mostly with an alloy body. I wanted the weight in it, so I wanted the HD (all steel), which no one had in stock, But recently the HDw came out (ALL stainless steel) So I jumped on getting that. If I ever go for concealed carry, the SIG P238 is the gun I would haul around.I will go and try the CZ and Beretta rentals at the range. I am certain they are both ultra reliable, and good shooters. It would boil down to how they feel in my hand.
Being an insane junkie for whatever I am interested in, I sort of wanted to buy another gun one of these 9mm) along with the SIG I ordered. But then I would be moving from paying to credit card... Grrr. I had enough of that most of my life, and really like paying the card off every month now. So I will wait til Oct to buy the 9mm.
PS one reason for just looking at CZ and Beretta: I have a 'damaged pinky finger. The non-removable type plastic grip/stock on many guns like Glock and SIG means my pinky finger is gonna be destroyed. Where with a gun with removable grips, those universally can be swapped out to a rubber grip. Which, with a touch of the Dremel tool, allows my pinky finger to bee happy. Like on my Ruger GP100: I fired 150 rounds one sitting, 100 of them .357 and my pinky finger was fine. The groove i cut in the rubber grip solved my issues. So it is a gun with a rubber grip or shoot only Left handed... LOL

2 main factors.
First is intended use. CC? Home defense? Tac? whatever else:
And since you gotta hit what you aim at, maybe a .380 or 9mm and not .40 or its bigger brother the 10mm. I've always been OK with 45acp.
Second is very important and that is FIT.
I had a buddy a LONG time ago with a Beretta 92. WAY too big a grip and it was uncomfortable. I think he felt the same and it was gone in a couple months.
Some of the Glocks I've picked up were the same. Felt too bulky. The OTHER part of fit is where the various levers fall in relation to your hand and fingers. Length of trigger pull is important, esspecially if you get a double / single action autoloader.
A single action like a 1911 always has the same length of pull.
And than some of the 'icing' features. CZ makes a 75bd which is a 'decocker' equipped '75b.
Others may have a mag safety which prevents firing a loaded chamber WITHOUT a mag inserted.
And of course, some applications may be made easier with glow-in-dark sights or even one of those laser illuminators.
At least try 'em for basic fit before proceeding. Some ranges, I understand DO have rentals which make later sales easier.
Too much is never enough
It's hard to make a recommendation not knowing what exactly you intend to use the weapon for; conceal carry, target, home defense, or tactical.
Is there a particular reason you want a 9mm rather than a .40 or .45 ?
I'm not a huge fan of either Marque. I would much rather have a used H & K, Kimber, or Sig. If your dead set on new the Springfield Arms Range Officer is a fine choice.
My brother has the "big" Desert Eagle in .50AE. He's fond of saying; .50 Action Express, when you absolutely positively require a closed casket funeral....
Meat; It's the right thing to do. Romans 14:2
I have a Ruger .357 GP100 and firing .357 magnum is good with it.
If I want a gun to blow a "big enough" hole (in an intruder) where I want it.. I can use the Ruger GP100.Mainly I want a gun with cheap ammo, other than a 22.
i have a Ruger MKiii for 22 service.Concealed carry (if I ever go there) will be my SIG p238HDW .380 Small and delightful to shoot. Heavier than alloy ones, still I like a heavy gun.
So I want another range gun in 9mm. (mainly due to 9mm ammo being cheaper than 38 or 357 I did not like spending $150 on ammo and shooting it in less than an hour. But being big enough it is not shooting 22.
Being a compulsive cheapskate, I can easily spend $700 on a gun to save a few bucks on ammo. LOL
PS I discovered the Beretta is stainless top and barrel, alloy bottom. Don't know if it matters a lot but like I wrote I like a heavy gun way better than the same gun lighter.). The CZ is all steel, and is 5 oz heavier than the Beretta.
(In comparison my Ruger GP100 is 45oz (with 6" barrel) vs the CZ at 38oz
