...you correctly called it a flat 12 since it is technically a 180º V12 and not a boxer.
I am not aware of any true 12 pot boxer engines, even Porsche used a 180º V rather than a Boxer motor in the 917.
4 and 8 cylinders only, right?
What about BMWs 2 pot and Porsches 6 pot boxers?
The difference between a boxer and a 180º V is the crankshaft.
In a V engine two pistons share a crank pin while in a boxer every piston is connected to its own.
I suspect the extra weight and complexity means 12 pot boxers are not a good idea.
Not quite as aggressive sounding as Porsche 917 on same track.
It has the same type of crap sound as the current F1 cars. Bring back the V8 10's and 12 cylinders.
IMO F1 should give each car an energy allowance with which to finish a race.
It could be used as either petrol, diesel, gas, electricity or any combination thereof.
Might give F1 back some relevance to todays or tomorrows motoring since according to Mercedes there is nothing in current F1 technology that will ever trickle down to road cars.
F1 is not about relating to the current production cars IMO. It is about pushing the envelope in aerodynamics and getting the most out of the drivetrain within the rules IMO. I suppose all electrics are in our near future?
