Early yesterday in the forest shooting at the sunrise:
Fully Auto set on Landscape, Canon A630. One keeper out of 28 shots on a 10 mile ride. Most were banal, some badly out of focus. Next time I will read the manual (if I can find it) and shlep the tripod.
Follow Ups:
A shot from Tahoe, last year in the spring. Just before most of the bears woke up and also before most of the insects!
Still several feet of snow on the ground in places. NICE.
Too much is never enough

Yes and with most Gum tree species native to Australia, I think. It's a beautiful tree. Don't see a lot of those here in NYC. Thanks for posting that photo.
about your winter season...ahhh... never mind.A while ago I was at my local car dealer and found this car with its engine stuffed in a little cabin hole under the bonnet. It's quite impressive at how they were able to fit all those million of nuts and bolts in such a little space. It must be hard for the mechanic to work on it as there's no ample room for his wrenches and a coffee mug
Anyway, according to the salesman, the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine will belt out 497 horsepower and a gall-smashing 516 lb-ft of torque, which is quite impressive considering that it's not using any turbocharged...
Right now, I'm very content just to look at and admire its engine's engineering feats...I can still hear my wife's saying to me..."you need a car as a retirement gift for yourself"...perhaps, someday.
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

Speaking of film, here's one from your neck of the woods, Amioutaline:
I can hear my son's voice ringing in my ears...
"yeah, that's cause you're using Auto... man up and use a manual mode"
:-)
Sad but true.
Here's how I do it (with a Nikon DSLR). I take an auto photo and note on the readout the shutter speed and f-stop. Then, I switch to a manual mode (on the Nikon DSLR, either "M" or "A") and set it to roughly those parameters, then start stopping DOWN (typically) a stop or two at a time -- either shutter or f-stop, depending on circumstances.
I am not exactly skilled yet (my son also says, in so many words "light meters are for wimps") but I can usually manage to take an OK photo of sunrise or (more typically) sunset -- sunrise in the summer time in NH is pretty darned early (and not typically as pretty, at my house, as sunset).
evening sunset 70-ish mm at 1/250 sec, f4.5, ISO 220
night-time stars (and the glow from Claremont, NH to the south) on a clear summer night 10 mm at 30 sec, f4.0 ISO 3200
Digital ain't film ;-) but... the best thing about digital is... take a picture; look at it... if you like it, keep it. If not, just delete it -- costs you nothin' :-)
all the best,

A "VR" (vibration reduction) lens.
Here's a photo taken, hand-held, with a VR zoom at 300 mm (which is approximately equivalent to 450mm in 'full-size format' land) :-)
all the best,

One fixed lens, anti-shake that doesn't do much. Still, it has two outstanding features, cost $250 8 years ago and fully paid for.
that your Canon has several exposure modes that'll help 'trick' it into an exposure setting that'll balance the background light with the (dark) foreground. Most of the point and shoot have 'landscape' 'backlight', and 'portrait' modes that enable some semblance of exposure "control". Check the manual :-) (yes, I realize that RTFM - reading the effing manual - goes against the ethos that some of us XY-chromosomed types hold dear...)
If you don't have the paper (or CD?) manual, I would bet money it's easily located and downloaded from somewhere in cyberspace :-)
all the best,
mrh
easier to carry-set up-use than a tripod. Here is a pic I took nearly 20 years ago in Colorado, your pic reminded me of it. Nikon, Fuji Film most likely.
