weren't we? Anyway, there was a time when a good movie wasn't followed by three or four or seven sequels. They were content to make a profit equal to the gross national product of a small nation once and let it go at that. "Gone With the Wind Again"? I don't think so. Yes, there were a few movies that had sequels. "Sitting Pretty" was followed by several Mr. Belvedere movies. But that was hardly in the class of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" or "Citizen Kane" and at least one of the subsequent Belvedere was good, but not as good as the original.
Some will argue that the Godfather movies were equally good. Never having been a fan of the original, it is hard for me to judge that. Given the Godfather Trilogy as an exception, can you think of any movie that had a sequel that was just as good as the original? Be honest and ruthless. Don't let your fondness for the original cloud your judgment. I am extremely skeptical that you can name one, but I'm willing to be wrong.
Follow Ups:
After all, if Kate Winslet is not in the cast, it cannot help but be better, right? Seriously, I can think of only a few instances where the sequel was better than the original. Granted these are only my opinion and as such will not mean much to anyone else, but I find (found) Godfather Part II, Terminator 2, and Toy Story 2 to be much more entertaining than their predecessors. Now, having said that, I find it very, very sad that Hollywood either lacks the talent to come out with new ideas in movies, or they feel it necessary to pander to the "lowest common denominator". What's out now- a "Get Smart" movie? C'mon....
The last really good movie I remember seeing was Gosford Park , and that was released in 2001.

Dread Pirate Roberts
I've often said that just before shedding this mortal coil I wish to be shown "Titanic". Forcing me to see it again would make me feel like I've lived forever.
Actually, if no one from the original cast were in the movie, it couldn't help but be better, lust aside. Though I really didn't wish to see it, Ms. Winslet's bosom was remarkably lovely.
I wanted to see "Gosford Park". Your post encourages me.
Isn't it interesting that none of the titles mentioned come close to being on a level of the movies Mike mentioned? Great movies stand alone. Ignoring the silly TV movie that followed up on GWTW, does anyone really want to find out what Scarlett did on "another day"? Some things are complete; the road ends and we have no wish to go farther.

In fact, IMO it's still the best of that series (next year-- Star Trek 12: So Old, So Tired ).
The second Spider-Man movie was better than the first.
Sequelitis is just proof that Hollywood is bereft of ideas. Nearly every movie fits one of three or four formulas. You have the Revenge Flick, the Buddy Flick, the Fish out of Water Flick, the Meet Cute, Fall for Each Other in the End Chick Flick. An 'atz it.
I'm sure that if The Treasure of Sierra Madre had been made three years ago, Madre II: The Next Generation would be hitting the theaters this week.

Everything's nice when you're covered in ice...
perhaps would have yielded "The Treasure of Sierra Padre", followed by "The Treasure of Sierra Tia", "The Treasure of Sierra Tio", "The Treasure of Sierra Abuelita (sp?)", and "The Treasure of Sierra Abuelito: Grampa's Revenge". Although, that may be giving too much credit to Hollywood creativity. Madre II would probably be more accurate.
And bravo for your recognition that Hollywood is now bereft of ideas. Having worked in the industry a bit and being around it longer, that is all too true.
Rocky 25.

Once, I had an idea...
I think it not only captured the spirit of the original, but took it to a new level.
Sad that he squandered the opportunity to turn the Rambo franchise into a winner in the same way.
Cheers
He makes entertaining movies and they do have their place. I love watching them when I'm dead from the day.
But few movies today from Hwood possess the filming expertise that went into the great films of the past, from Casablanca to North by Northwest; Citizen Kane to Treasure of Sierra Madre.
Entertainment sells. Art takes too much thought, time and energy.

Once, I had an idea...
Apparently the critics at the time bemoaned the fact that plays were getting very light on plot and very heavy-handed with special effects, with almost identical wording to some modern commentaries on film.
So it's nothing new really *grin*.
the key lies in your phrase "getting very light on plot". That means in the 17th century such elements were still included, unlike so many (screen)plays today.
Rocky 25 = Citizen Cane?
In the same way I'm Catholic.

Once, I had an idea...
It seems that one passed below the radar.
At least I'm pretty sure we did. My brain 25 years ago would have without a doubt.
Who's opinion of himself is so immensely higher than his talent.
Kinda like a snail believing it's an elephant.
