never seen Chinatown. I was too busy hiking and fishing in the Alaska wilderness at the time and didn't see many movies.
Anyway, internet listening reveals what you said, and the link below has an interesting story about the solo trumpet at the beginning of the movie.

looks like great cinematography, great acting, and great music though. Arrgh.
It's also one of my favorite movies. Extremely dark and disturbing, but excellent acting by Nicholson, Houston, Dunaway and others. The movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the same plot minus a couple adult themes.
