One of my favourite albums is Taj Mahal "The Real Thing". A true classic........ and the only band I know where the brass section consisted of 4 tubas arranged by Howard. A stroke of genius.
Here's an excerpt - John Ain't it Hard. Sublime. Howard Johnson at his best. You really need to hear the whole album. You're Going to Need Somebody on Your Bond is another great track.

and they are all great and his presence and talent are a big part of that.
One of my favorite tuba players. Yes, I have more than one.
Rest in Peace Mr. Johnson, thanks for the sound.

I met Howard at the 2000 Vision Festival in New York. It was my first time at the festival, and as I was buying my ticket I spied Howard walking in. I asked him if he were playing, and he replied in an theater voice (i.e., intended for a larger audience than just me) that he wasn't "out enough" to play the Vision Festival. Of course that wasn't true, and he played Vision several times in later years. I admire him being a musicians' musician and not limiting himself to any one "bag."
