Hi, what crossover works well for the 288 and 311? The Hiraga is meant for multi cells and I think the compensation circuit wouldn't be the same in the 311, true?
I've got 288-16g on the 311-90 and 416z in Onken 360l cabinets. Right now I'm using the auto former based crossovers I got from Werner in Germany. These are nice, but I do think at the least some kind of compensation circuit for the highs could help.
Anyone with experience, your help is appreciated. Joe Roberts, your input would be particularly appreciated as you are an inspiration for me trying Altecs in the first place!
Best,
Doug

I've got the same HF setup (288-8G on 311-90's) but they are actively crossed at 500hz and attenuated with a Werner autoformer. To extend the high frequency I use a pair of MR902's (w/8 ohm diaphragm) that are 1st order passed over at 6000hz (also attenuated by the Werner autoformer). Would I be better off just using the 288/311 with a compensation circuit? If so, what would that circuit look like? Thanks for your input.
Hi Jad, I tried JBL 075 with my 288 & 311 using the Werner xover, but I couldn't get them to integrate. The sound of the 311 alone didn't go as high of course but came pretty close and without the negatives the tweeter added. All in all, it was better as a 2 way.
Right now, I am playing with bypass caps on the Werner xover and have gained some extension with a .22uf and .01uf on the hf motor run. The idea of a compensation circuit still makes sense to get more top end lift although I don't know how to figure out values.
Anyone?
Best,
Doug
I had tried a JBL 2405 a while back before I got the autoformer (used an L-pad to attenuate) but couldn't get that to blend right. Also tried an Altec 902 without a horn attached and it wasn't too bad (much better than 2405). So far the MR902's are the best but depending on type of track playing (vocal, big band, small group jazz) it's blend varies.
Use any of the appropriate crossover point Altecs, or any other crossover that would work with the multicells or segmented horns. I've used almost all of the horns and get them to work fine with the same crossovers. Maybe you will make some small changes to the settings of the mid horn attenuator, but there is no significant difference. Each horn model has its own "sound" which has nothing to do with crossover point.
I'm no expert, but I think eq is done mechanically in the radial horns by virtue of their dispersion characteristics, so they might end up hot on axis if you apply cd type equalisation. Maybe Joe will respond -- I would like to get a definitive answer, too.
