Hi,
I'm looking for mono tube amplifiers for my Tannoy Autographs. Early (orange dustcap) reds are installed in it. As far as i researched, SET would be a good choice but i'm not really sure. Waiting for the members' valuable suggestions.
Thanks

Most internal speaker wiring, usually crossover to speaker, and amp to crossover wiring is insufficient in Transfer Efficiency, which forces one to use higher power amps, which are more UGLY sounding than a pristine SET amp of the simplest type. ( eg: two stage direct coupled with DHTs as Finals ).
I would look FIRST to improving the speaker's internal wiring, THEN you can run a wider variety of amps, including the low powered but pristine SET amps.

I see you live in Turkey and I don't how handy you are but the Heath W-5ms are one of the best sounding 25 watt amps ever made,Bar None..I like the Leaks and the quads as well as I have an ST50 and a pair of the TL25s but the W5ms when recapped and even stock unrebuilt can be out of this world. They take KT66s but can run 6L6gcs as well.

Michael, thank you very much for your contribution and suggestions to the subject. Yes, i live in Istanbul and Datca (SE Aegean coast town) seasonally. There are some very good audio repair technicians here, so it is possible to do many restorations or modifications.
Your Heathkits seem in great condition, i've heard a lot about them, how easily they drive and how warm and natural they sound. They are also fairly priced because of high production numbers. And that's why i guess, people underestimate their quality. Including myself, many times we evaluate systems biased by price. Thank you for reminding me this beautiful amplifiers, i've totally forgot them as a match to Tannoys. Hope can find a pair in good condition to try.
I inherited my father's Red 15's over ten years ago but was never able to use them since my wife would object to the large boxes required. Recently I had the happy idea to mount them in my open baffles in the JE Lab style with Goldwood 1858 18"s doing the deeper bass below 80 hz.
I had been using several different 3" or 4" full range speakers but the Tannoy has turned out to be much better. I was never really happy with the mid-range in any of the box mountings I heard (including Autographs) but the open baffle arrangement works much better to my ears. My wife has not complained too much about them.
I obviously bi-amp with a PLLXO crossover feeding a class D amp for the 18" Goldwoods and my DIY 6E5P / 6C33C parafeed amp for the mid-range treble. The latter amp produces copious amounts of heat so might not be suitable for your climate. It uses Tannoy transformers from ceiling speakers as the output transformers.
Obviously I am not suggesting that you replace your Autographs but you might like to try a 6C33C amp if you can stand the heat.

Woww! Your open baffles seem really interesting and nice. It definitely provides high WAF!
And you solved the bass issue wisely. Very nice setup.
I've never seen or listened to a 6C33C amplifier. I will research it and try to find someone who has one to have a listen.
Thank you so much for the recommendations.

Scroll down a bit.
I suggest you listen carefully to something close to what you are considering. My experience is that some Tannoys, though relatively sensitive, require more power to come alive. David
Thank you for the answer. That is exactly my concern. Will the SET amps be enough to make them sing? Best is to try different amps as much as possible, i guess..
You really should do that. If it works, it works. You do not want to end up with a boring sound or mushy bass. When I used to live in Hong Kong, I heard a lot of Tannoys, from the old classics to the contemporary professional models. I also had both 3LZ with Red drivers and later Stirling TW's. I like both SET and later push-pull tube amps, and use both with other speakers. If I could not listen first, I would probably start with push-pull KT88's for Tannoys. David
Yes i will do that. First, i'll start with MC 275 and then try the British combo with Quad II's. Later, the SETs; there's a close by Hi-Fi store with Air Tight ATM 300 and Sun Audio 2A3. They're not the mono setup i desire, but a good comparison and start.
I used the monitor golds with 275 and quads, i liked the quads more. But the lamps on 275 were not good which made the comparison not fare.
I have Canterbury SE's that like their power but are very revealing. Not
as good as your Autographs, but good. I had been using Prima Luna Prologue 5
with KT88's or 6550's, good power but lacking a little detail and clarity.
I also have a Decware Zen Torii MKIII that is designed with el34's, excellent clarity but little weak in power. Owner Steve Deckert recommended
that I use KT66's and that is doing the trick. You may wish to look at Decware.com andemail Steve to get his recommendation. Good luck!
Doug
Doug, thank you very much for the recommendations. I will check Decware. My Quads are also doing good, as you say KT66's are working very well with Tannoys. Actually i'm very curious to try the Leak 12.1's but with the prices on the market it's hard to take the risk. Most of them need a complete overhaul.
