There is currently on e-Bay a pair of Altec Lansing Model 19s for which the seller is asking $7,500.00! There have been several other pairs at around $5,000 asking prices recently.
Now, I have owned two pair of Model 19s, bought within the last 4-5 years. I paid $1,800. for one pair and $1,200 for the other pair. One of the pairs I bought was in nearly as good a shape as the listed pair, which, I have to say, look to be in fantastic condition.
I think very highly of this model as one of the best large, high-efficiency speakers of its era.
These asking prices seem totally out of whack with the market for these speakers. I wonder what other inmates think. Am I right or did I just get two really good bargains on the speakers I purchased?
Enjoy your music!

As a general rule, they will only be worth what someone is willing to PAY for them. Sure, market value (whatever THAT is) plays into it, but if some deep pocket guy WANTS 'em, there 'ya go.
I have this arguement ALL THE TIME with my brother who loves old 'classic' cars. He tells me car 'x' is worth whatever and it's a good 'investment'. i tell him I'd rather have a good 'driver' for about 1/4th the $$$ and don't care if it's an investment.
Too much is never enough
they will keep going up! I don't know where or how these seller price their Model 19's but it just crazy.
I always wanted a pair but don't have the room or proper size room for them that's why I'm making my own GPA driver 2 way system. This will cost way less than what is going on ebay and hopefully will sound way better with the finalized Zilch Z19 xover!
The Altec Model 19 are beautiful looking/sounding speaker but with GPA still selling the drivers just doesn't make sense to pay those prices for used model 19's that still may need some work on them. Shoot GPA even makes an updated Model 19 xover too! Just need to get the 811 horns and you can have the cabinets made. As a matter of fact, there was a guy back on the east coast a few years back making and selling brand new model 19 cabinets for pretty good prices (I don't know if he still making them) and you just need to buy the GPA drivers/xover for them.
Hope this helps!
I watch hifishark and the price of 19s is clearly going up. It is not just an ebay phenomenon.
There were only so many made, you can still get drivers, the cabinets are nice old school cabinets, and they sound pretty damn good in a variety of rooms with a nice simple design. I also find with the Asian market, a lot of vintage is drying up and worthwhile pieces are sitting with collectors and not going anywhere.
The good news is when I die, my partner will probably pay someone to take them away. Good luck to one of you! :-)
Absolutely CRAZY out of line by magnitudes pricing for these decent speakers. Probably either purchased, or plan to purchase numerous pairs of this speaker and are trying to artificially set a ridiculously inflated selling price.
You would need to be crazy to spend more than 2k on model 19.
I own two pair of 19s, one pair completely rebuilt and the other where needed.
If the cabinets are refinished, grilles repaired and/or recovered, crossovers recapped and noninductive resistors replaced, woofers reconed, new diaphragms installed, remaged motors, and new foam installed on the upper cabinet then a pair is in my thinking worth about $3000 - $3500. And also a bargain for the new owner when you compare what these speakers can do compared to a new set of speakers and their price. If someone lists a pair for $7500 and it's a survivor and never been worked on then they're just fishing. The going price for a good pair is about $2500, they just don't show up often enough. I've seen a few pairs listed at $5000 and don't think they ever sold. I'd never part with mine even though I could double my money.
Considering one can get Khorn's for 1800 {and they walk all over Altec 19's} not only is the price out of whack... have noticed this wackiness has crept into Ebay as a whole... the 511 horn is FAR superior to the 811.

...a bit hyperbolic dontcha think? While the 19s are no paradigm of accuracy or neutrality, the K-horn is by far, the worst sounding speaker I've ever had the pleasure of owning. However, my biggest mistake was thinking their sonic flaws could be remediated thru use of modern HF drivers and fancy, non-stock xovers. WRONG! After many hundreds of $$ and countless hours of experimenting with various low/medium watt tube amps, I discovered their basic character is unchangable. And of course, YMMV.
Hmm, yes compared to the Altec 19 ... the song remains the same
I use JBL 2360 Horns in a 2 way configuration using Klipsch Khorn bass bins... I know of no other more realistic bass than a horn loaded bass system. Most people have never heard a Khorn in the right room. 13 foot ceiling 26 by 18 was one example given by Paul Klipsch... there are others. Am zealous DIY guy, is nothing to trounce a Altec 19...
Far harder to design a horn bass bin that betters the Klipsch Khorn bass bin.

...you feel the way you do.....you've converted 2/3 of your Khorns to JBL ;-) ;-)
Sigh; you are correct, Steve.

I own 19's too.... I bought mine for a great price at $400. They need new foam, and I am/will send the drivers and woofers off to GPA get new diaphragms, cones, and to have their magnets recharged so I'll many years of use and enjoyment from them.
I also have seen those listings. I think they are/have gotta be an anomaly or someone trying to push the price of these speakers. I have looked at the prices of 19's when new at around $700 USD a piece in the 70's in new condition, add in inflation, they would maybe retail for about $5500 USD, if brand new today.
Those listings prices shock me honestly......
