A friend dropped off some Magnavox 12" 4 ohm console woofers for me to measure in ARTA.
Looks like they run full range with a 4" tweeter crossing over first order 16uF/25V cap.
Small square magnets on the back.
I ran them in WinISD but they would not work for a vented or closed box.
Maybe OB's or an open back box similar to the console they came from.
Any ideas I could pass along?

IMO if a person is no longer going to use them in their original design with their born stereo. And assuming one isnt going to use them in some special home audio project of sorts. And this is where it can get rather debatable what their useful purpose can be...
The notion "full range" has far differing meanings. Just looking at these, Im not sure how much useful bottom end they could do. They look to have decent top end for a 12"
The vast majority of these vintage alnico console pulls dont handle much power. They never needed to. And if used properly shouldnt need to.
But just look at the going rate for new alnico guitar speakers. With how available these alnico pulls are, real shame more guitar guys dont make better use of how cheap and available these are. They sound amazing IMO on a single ended and low power PP guitar amp. But different strokes....
Ive also heard SOME sound amazing in home made home audio speaker systems. Again its often their bottom end that can leave something to be desired. Not always and not in all cabinets. Just depends what one is going for. Just seems IMO its much easier to make great use of them in the guitar world.

Great cheap drivers!
I put 200Hz crossover modules into the XM9 and set the baffles on top of my woofer boxes.Also replaced the old NP crossover cap on the tweeter with a 15uF motor run.
The subjective result was actually pretty good.
Overall mellow presentation.
Vocals and string instruments sound really nice.

What you ended up with, is similar to what I always ended up doing with similar "full range" drivers.
I have and used a pair of Fostex Sigma 168 drivers in a pair of Z horns. When I first bought and set em up, I liked what I heard. They have great revealing and dynamic sound. But the top and bottom end left much to be desired, FOR ME... Ended up adding a Visatone horn tweeter and a sub. Then the system sounded AMAZING to me. Seems allot of guys end up going in a similar way.
Not at all trying to slam the full range community. Just for me I always preferred the sound when I added some additional drivers. Ive been to a couple shows years ago. And I remember hearing a top end Terry Cain system. Rest the fine mans soul... Very impressive. I can see how he helped keep that scene alive.
I still wish I could hear one of these "full range" driver systems with a driver in one of those crazy large 150+ lb cabinets that say they reach down to around 30hz. That could really be amazing. Id have no problem adding a horn tweeter like what I did with a simple passive Xover. Power the whole thing with a nice tube amp. I bet it really could be breath taking...

Oh BTW, I miss my XM9. Really wish Id never sold it now. Didnt know all the virtues of active amplification back when I first bought it... Oh well... Done lots of learning in this hobby and Im far from done...
I used to run 208 Sigma's w/notch filter in OB's with a 7 cu. ft. ported woofer boxes loaded with Audax PR330MO.Fostex T90A on top.
Those were biamped at 200 cycles with the XM9.
I sold the Fostex and Audax stuff on ebay, now kicking myself for doing it.
Listening to the Magnavox baffles made me miss the BassZilla setup I used to have.

Love direct radiators of lower eff too. Just need higher powered amps to make em sing like high eff.
Is that a John Hogan amp in the pic? I have a bunch of Don Allen single ended amps I dig. And many PP amps too. I also have a lone Dyna Mk3 I picked up. May sell or fix it up and grab a 2nd. Not sure yet.
I was in talks with another fellow over in vintage who recommended 6 or 12 db slopes on horns and high eff drivers. I plan to read up more on other peoples experiences and stances on this. Especially in reference to active Xovers.

Those are BH Paramour SE 2A3 modded with 6J5 CCS drivers, sold on ebay.
I use DIY SE amp of various kinds on horns/baffles.
The Dynaco amps on bass boxes.
As far as active x-overs, a simple 227 opamp 2nd order crossover can sound nice and a lot cheaper than Marchand offerings.
The XM9 is just easier to use because of the Hz modules, high/low channel attenuators and the damping control.
When the 808-8A drivers for my 811B horns arrive, I will do more experimenting.
The plan was a basic two way with horns on top of a ported box.
I really don't mean to be a smartass, but if I had a few of those drivers I would heat them up until the thermoset adhesive which holds the nice little alnico magnets on releases then I would clean up the magnets and give them to my grandchildren to play with. I would challenge them to find something new or different to do with magnets.
