Hi folks,
I am about to embark in a time-share trout fishing camp. The only power available is from 12v solar system. I figure I can run a small Tripath amp and a pair of efficient speakers. The gear will stay in the woods so I am looking for inexpensive speakers (<$250) that require little power and will not attract attention. Low-medium volumes suffice as does mid-fi.
I would greatly appreciate your input on scenarios so I can have a little Bach with my coffee as I watch the loons...
Thanks,
Bert

Hi folks,
Just picked up a pair of PSB Alpha bookshelves - original model, for approx. $75 USD. rated sensitvity: 92dB/2.93V/m, probably in-room. Driving them with a LP-2020A+ Lepai Tripath Class-T amp that cost $30.
Test runs demonstrated that they do the job wonderfully all while satisfying the criteria of inexpensive in case of theft.
Thanks to all for your help!
Bert
OK what about an all in one, jam-box type? Bring it in and take it with you when you leave. Eliminates the worries of when you aren't there. Useful at home, garage, yard.
Off grid audio is something I have been thinking about for a while, because I want good music on my sailing catamaran. Cats are very stable, so I wouldn't have to worry too much about it getting knocked around or over. Of course the marine environment and Florida sun are harsh. You have better options. I've been using this Sondpex. Not bad at all for $70. At least it's all in one. You could take it home with you when you leave. Stereo is an option for you, but I would suggest mono is too. Consider it in keeping with the primitive conditions.
It's too bad T amps can't be bridged into mono. It seems choices are; 10 watts/12v or 50 watts/24v. I'll wire two AGM or even lead acid 12v batteries in series to 24v. They wouldn't have to be big. That leaves what kind of speaker. Got some good ideas from the posts. I was thinking one of the newer Tannoy HT speakers, used of course. Maybe a Klipsch Heresy. Need some SPL, cause sometimes the party gets crunk up.
Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
What about these?
SPL:85dB is a deal breaker. I need to be very parsimonious with electricity in this particular case. Any simple high efficiency kits out there?
thanks
You did say low to med volume levels. They would be fine for that.
They are only 85db efficient.
Consider in-wall or ceiling mount speakers. Lots of choices and can be very inconspicuous. Look on Ebay or PartsExpress.
"Consider in-wall or ceiling mount speakers. Lots of choices and can be very inconspicuous. Look on Ebay or PartsExpress" would be perfect but it is a log cabin and has no ceiling. my bad for not including this in my original request.
Thanks!
How big a space? Consider the wall ceiling mounts or speakers designed for Autos. House them in simple boxes that could also used for storage units. Also tripaths often prefer 4 ohm speakers.
after installing 100's of in wall/ceiling from many manufacturers they mostly suck and are not a good value.

These are cheap and may fit your needs.
Look good but Costco Canada don't seem to carry them. I will investigate further.
Thanks!
I would suggest finding a local pair of Klipsch KG4's they don't look like any outstanding speaker, but with the right sources they sound phenomenal. If you are going to have wireless networking in the camp I would also look into the VAMP - the mini vortex box and install the squeeze server software on it it runs very efficient around 5 watts and puts out great quality sound. I have close to this setup in my bedroom and I always amazed with the quality of sound.
Neil,
Thanks the VAMP looks interesting for home as I am running the Logitech server on a monster machine presently.
I have noted the Klipsch and will keep my eyes open. Where can I find a simple resource to feed my "grocery/watch list?
Thanks!
Bert
Have a look on Kijiji at some vintage speakers.
You will have to google the models that interest you to see their efficiency.
Here is an example below, 94db Sansui. $110.
They are brown and efficient, just what the doctor ordered.
Garg0yle,
Makes great sense to use vintage speakers. Where can I learn about which models I should be looking for?
Thanks for your help!
Bert
You could try some google searches for "efficient vintage speakers" etc. This will give you an idea of what the usual suspects are.(Klipsch, Tannoy, Altec etc.)
Although most of these may be too nice to leave at the cottage though.
