Anyone using them on Two Way (for now) BR/Le Cleach Horn combo? Can you please share your experience?
I perused articles online mostly three way or 3.1 way. Just want to know if someone is using the device in a two way config.
Thanks!
Abe

I found the MiniDSP 2x4 to be only suitable as a low pass filter. For high pass it sounds too compromised sonically. Go PLLXO for the HP only. That's the route I've taken, it retains detail and purity of tone, unlike the MiniDSP.
That's not good news. I doubt the 24/96 2x8 will sound much better than the 24/48 2x4. We'll see. Even with what you suggest the high pass from the DSP is feeding the signal to the PPXLO, so whatever damage is done. I've always wanted to try an analog active crossover as the lowpass and a PPXLO as the highpass. Maybe one day. Belyin has a novel way, just use it as a one way, but that does limit it's usefulness.
Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
Belyin isn't using any crossover on the highs from what I can tell from his post. Removing bass duty from any fullrange driver is going to drastically lower distortion and increase power handling. Doing this with a PLLXO has sounded the best. There is no loss in sound quality whatsoever. I've always found there to be a loss in sound quality with either line level active crossovers, digital filtering(AD/DA), and passive speaker level crossovers. The only thing I've yet to try is to buy the nanoDIGI I/O card and connect it to the IS2 port on my MiniDSP 2x4 therefore eliminating the additional AD/DA conversion. I bought the MiniDSP knowing I could upgrade to this setup if things didn't sound good enough. The MiniDSP still represents amazing value and is a great tool that helps you learn about the equipment you have and the range of their ability.
I am using the MiniDsp as a lowpass filter with an Oris 150 horn system. I let the horns roll-off "naturally" and use a 2nd order filter at 160hz to power the bass speakers ( dual JBL 2226 15" drivers--surplus movie theater boxes.) I'm sure the setting could be tweaked, but I have been happy with my initial set-up and haven't felt the need to adjust it (it's been about 3 years!)
Thanks for sharing your experience! I too share the same disovery! I am very happy with Altec BR and JMLC horns using miniDSP as line kevel XO.

I'm using MiniDSP NanoDigi on a 2-way OB, and very happy with it. This is all-digital (digital source, and my own DACs), can't vouch for the MiniSDP's quality with analog in/out.
Thank you! Do you have compression driver/horns on your OB? What order, cut off freq, and type of filter(XO) combo you settled in for LF and HF if you do not mind me asking? I want to try it before doing the sweep as I have an OB too eith passive XO.

Yes: JBL 15's on the bottom, and open-backed JBL 2420's on top, with QSC horns. I'm using a 24dB/oct Linkwitz-Reilly crossover in MiniDSP. Additionally, I have a passive equalization network for the bass (between the DAC and the bass amp).

You have very good taste in books!
(I don't recognize the other two.)
:)
I will stat my reading the application notes at miniDSP website and see if I can understand.

Hey there,
Late reply, but I missed this when it first came up. Have you picked up a mini DSP yet?
I got one recently, for eventual use in a similar project. Plans change, but currently I intend to run the bass drivers thru the DSP, minimal passive X-over on the horn.
In the meantime, I tried it with my main system (15" coaxial + 2*15 bass drivers), just as a crossover for the bass drivers. I found it pretty easy to get it going for that application.
Yes! I use REW to measure and have it for two way application.
Hey Amandarae,
How did the minidsp turn out for you? I've crossed over to the dark side, and ordered a minidsp 2x8, with the calibrated mic. I'll check back in.

Hi Jamie! It worked very well, thanks for asking. I am very happy with its addition to my system. I too bought the mic from mini DSP and it is so easy to use. I bet you will like it! I use the mini DSP on a two way (Altec 416 in BR cabs with Altec 802 or 288 on JMLC horns) application. A few more months of playing and I think I am ready for a 3 way or a 2.1 (sub for 80 Hz and below),

Wow, your pictures are neat. I've never thought of a hybrid horn OB system like that. Now it makes me think of the very early WE theatre systems that were OB with a horn tweet.

Hi Amandarae,
I don't use mindsp, but I do use two way Marchand analog units. I think it all comes down to your philisophical bent. Do ADC/DACS make you cringe? If not, then spend the $99 and give the mindsp a try. They have many capabilites that only DSP can give you.
Hope this helps,
Jamie

I am going for it!
Nahh, DACs / ADCs does not bother me. I have a headphone system where DACs are king.
I am no digital, tone control, equalization, and caps on the signal path snob. All is fair game as long as it sounds good to me. Thanks for the encouragement!
