Hello all,
I've looked at a couple of these projects with interest. These use woofers side on, firing (push pull) into narrow manifolds, so that from the listening position all you see is a baffle with a narrow vertical slot. Ztransform on diy audio forum has done one I was most impressed by.
One limitation seems to be driver size - too big means a deep slot, which means you have to cross them very low. So for higher displacement, you need more drivers, rather than bigger drivers.
I'm curious about the possibility of using two or more slots rather than the normal one, for example to squeeze an array of 16 woofers into the "stand" of a front horn (such as Azura or Oris). It seems like an obvious way to get more spl and or less distortion in the same bulk. It would have half the front area and much better WAF than a 4*4 array on a flat or U-shaped OB.
Apart from the obvious (twice the cost and build time) would there be any drawback in going from one to two+ slots?
Follow Ups:
I use a quad IB15s, a pair in each corner.
They do well to about 100hz. Into the mid 100s they loose quality.
I would recommend 12s with Fs below 25hz and Qts above .4 with the slot a shallow as possible. Reason being the SLPP has excellent punch and benefit more from a higher crossover 150hz or higher.
IF you have a nice punchy midbass now and are OK with 70-90 hz crossover then consider the Dayton 18s.
I've collected two kinds of OB 12's, intending to use four per plenum.
What are the dimensions of that box and slot??
The photo is of a 25hz~27hz 6th order vented box that is 100.5dB/2.83V/1M (BassBox v6.0)and is 8Ω. The box is about 24" x 24" x 45", the slot is about 7" wide and 27" tall.
This photo was used to show what the plenum would look like of the OB version I have in mind. I plan on making the OB front panel look like the original Carver Amazing (monolith).
When you get the project well started and when it's completed please treat us to photos and description.
