I just paid a visit to the DUMBO showroom last week and heard these beautiful speakers. And here they are in the NY Observer. Jonathan says 104 db. I would love a pair of these...

Like it or not he makes good use of materials and design. The iron baffle shaped like it is must be dense and stiff. More so than all but a few materials.
I'm all for innovation. I hope the "Ironic" is more than a 2-way ribbon tweeter / 15" direct radiator OB. Diffusers/reflectors are interesting. Just the other day I heard a man talking as if he was next to me. (No, this doesn't happen often.) Looking around I saw no one but a long curved wall that was acting as a reflector. It only affected one 10" focal area. One step in either direction and I heard nothing. It's an interesting concept.
I wish OMA would give some science and philosophy behind it rather than the mfg process. But I could see how a man could be enraptured watching fire birth speakers while he sips Kopi Luwak.
"I hope the "Ironic" is more than a 2-way ribbon tweeter / 15" direct radiator OB"
It's not. That's the ironic part. LOL
I had to look up Kopi Luwak.
Is that the audiophile beverage for watching speakers being made?
Up to $600 a kilo and then you need to account for cream and sugar:)
The interesting part about Kopi Luwak, like the OMA Ironic, is how it's made.
As with many delicacies, I wonder about the first person to try it and what made them think it would be a good thing to do.
Not even delicacies. Who was the first guy to suck on a grazing animal's nipples? Did the rest of the tribe give him funny looks?
Who then decided it'd be even better when rotted?
I really like the way they look as art.
High sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low distortion, and smooth frequency response. Pwk

You know, I will compare Jonathan & OMA to Harry Partch and his music. While you may not like it, only a fool would deny it's brilliance.
Why do you find this music "brilliant" in the first place? Without my knowing what qualifies music as being "brilliant" I'd be hardpressed to either agree or disagree with your assessment that " only a fool would deny it's brilliance. "That said, and I'm quite sure many will disagree with me. But I definitely don't like it and personally struggle at even calling it music...

Reminds me a lot of Mickey Hart, drummer for the Greatful Dead. He records a lot of percussion based stuff. Check out Dafos, or Planet Drum.
Thank you, noroom4squares, for introducing me to Harry Partch. The music is fresh (to me) and splendid! Please post again in this thread to tell me what CD I can purchase from Amazon or elsewhere which will include Daphne of the Dunes(Part 1).
Thanks in Advance.
I have it on the LP "the World Of Harry Partch" I'm not a CD user but I'd bet its on Cd. There are some great documentaries on YouTube about Partch. He made most of his instruments from redwood he salvaged on the coast of California. A true American genius he was.
I'm glad to have introduced you to this music. It's really fantastic stuff.
Thank you, noroom4squares. I will look for it. I too play LPs and have since 1955 when I was a lad of 6 yrs. old. Anything I like as well as this I usually buy LP for home and CD for car and boat.

This is a limited "... edition of 10...".
Beautiful? I hope they look better in real life.......

Interesting, but the only time I spend $95k on speakers is when the enclosure is a BMW 650.
Knowing the little I do about Jonathan of OMA, I'm sure these speakers sound absolutely great! But I, for one, just cannot get behind these looks. That said, I've discovered finding a great audio component is like finding a great wife. Both are very difficult to find and everyone is looking for their particular version of "the best." However once you've finally found what it is you're looking for, you'll know it was worth the effort it took to find it! So I'm quite sure for someone out there these speakers are "the best" and just what they're looking for, but for me, these aren't the one.

Haven't you heard? Hi-fi today means charging outrageous prices for everything, even the things you can DIY for a few hundred bucks. This is what is killing hi-fi. Young people just starting out cant afford any of it, so they just resign themselves to listening to MP3 files on their phone with ear buds. Sad, really...
Hornlover and Bill F., I very much agree with the two of you about outrageously priced audio components. This reminds me of Paul McGowan's daily online blog today. I hope I'm not breaking any rules to copy and paste part of it here. It is:
" How could it be any good?
Got a note from a reader concerning the new power amplifier I wrote about here. “Your new amp is going to sell for seven thousand and you write the goal is to make the best in the world. Really? How could it be any good at that price?” I was pretty shocked to read that. I am not sure what to write back.
Do we still equate price and performance even when we’re talking thousands of dollars? It’s true the new amp is less than some. I’ve seen amps reaching into the many tens of thousands of dollars. It is also true it’s significantly higher than many.
Does price give products permission to lay claim to greatness? I am sure we’d all like to think we’re above this and rely strictly on performance. But I fear we may be kidding ourselves. This whole subject confuses and confounds me.
At my age I don’t want to make products that compete within a category. We’ve done that for years. “Best in class.” Boring. Time’s too short. I want to make products that actually are the best.
I wonder if within our culture the idea of price vs. performance isn’t so ingrained as to be immovable?"
Some poor Bozo is bothered that the amp is ONLY going to cost seven grand. How could it possibly be worth a damn?
I think this clearly illustrates what the two of you mean.
I believe I have one of the best amps in the world. It cost me less than 1/4 of seven grand used. But then it only outputs 10 watts or so into the speakers it drives. It is the most expensive power amp I ever bought.
The adage 'A fool and his money are soon parted' may pre-date the advent of audio gear by five centuries but it still applies.
One more thing. Throughout history, fools have been reproducing, so it's more than sound propagation!
> Throughout history, fools have been reproducing
+1, like the poor God must surely love the stupid, He certainly keeps cranking them out.
Right on Bill.
Like the guy on Ebay who had some beat up old Western Electric drivers for sale for a ridiculous amount of money.
It wasn't based on audio performance, more about historical museum grade rarity and lots of text.
Amen to that Bill!

Totally agree. That's how I got back into hifi, after 25 years away - discovered SETs and the loonies that build them by scrounging dumpsters for old TVs to get parts - they seemed to be having so much more fun that the guys competing to see who could spend more for speaker cables!
These days it seems the young and poor are into headphones, much more affordable and well adapted to small apartments and frequent moving, not to mention roommates who don't like your favorite music!
