Was wondering how a Gooodmans Axiom 80 would work in open baffle configuration with a 15"(altec 416???) below filling in the lower registers.
Anybody tried anything like this?
People seem to think they sound amazing but shelved down from midbass and below.

I bought a single Axiom 80 about a year and a half ago and just picked up my fourth Axiom 80 recently. I'm planning to build a "Thorsten Magnificat" type system with two Axiom 80's and 12" Axiom 22 mkii per box. Will bi-amped them with a 2A3 and a 45 amp. Hopefully, I will have this completed this summer. Currently using Tannoys but they don't have the magical midrange that the Axiom 80 have.
Here is cab designs for that loudspeaker
I think you could do better for what you have to pay for them on ebay. Unless you pick up a pair cheaper. KM30 would probably beat them for less on ob They have a peak that will annoy you after a while IMHO. though not heard a axiom 80 But I do have a pair of 301's and a few other models. The axiom 80's do work in open baffle. There is a horn plan around for 4? of them a side for theaters. So horn use is a possible way of fixing the low end just cut down the factory plan to a single. If you where going to add another driver there is better alternatives for a lot less money. German radio drivers for eg. They are a great deal more revealing then any Goodman's driver I have heard. What makes the axiom 80 special is that they are a full range using them as a mid driver is sort of is a waste of money. Even a audax 6 inch mid and a horn tweeter will out play a axiom 80 in that application. If you have a pair and want to add value consider a factory spec-ed cabinet with aru. They probably will be at there best full range in a original cab. You wont get any money for a ob when your done with it. The cut down horn idea would be supa original and desirable I would think too. Even if you had to add a sub. Consider these drivers are not supa thin revealing cones. Those are the sort of cones that excel in ob because of the lack of colorations. These will work in reflex or horns well.
Tube Builder, thanks for the reply.
I have had a pair of axiom 80s for a few years but not really used them.
I am now thinking about various ways of putting them into use.
When I first got them they were in very beaten up original spec cabinets but the aru's were missing. I listened to them briefly and found them fantastic from lower mids up and the lower registers despite being stepped down were very fast. I kind of recall the bass was reasonably extended but the whole lower range just seemed a (quite a)few db down on the rest of the range.
I have had axiom 201's (similar to 301 but lesser magnets)and they were not even remotely in the same league ... they sounded like mud in comparison to the axiom 80.
I was surprised you thought the axiom 80 so peaky as though it's been a while since I heard them, I don't recall the axiom 80 having the lowther peakiness (anyone more familiar with axiom 80 care to comment on this aspect?)that I am all too familiar with, having used pm7a's in voigt pipes for some years.
I have not heard them I read they had a peak. Not as bad as a lowther nothing could be could it? . Mick Malony used them for a while on open baffle 2 pair Thorsten did too. But they both tired of them. I can imagine you would need the aru to get low end from them. I had in mind you could use a good sub like a tapped horn. I still think cutting down the big original theatre horn plan would be cool. I guess they would suffer the same problem all back loaded horns suffer the fr suck out where the back wave meets the front wave though. The aru is like a leaky baffle like the aperadoc? plan thier talking about above. Similar principle. Should work well. Good luck with it. btw I have not even seen a pair com up for sale on ebay recently like a few years. Not that I have been looking for them in particular. They must be worth a lot to sell when you do tire of them. That and ten inch tannoy reds you just dont see any more.
