And I will not be afraid to diss any that perform marginally, when I get back. And, I will be visiting the Audio Note room for sure - These have been hyped on par with Bose.Cut-Throat

I'm not sure if he's going to have an active display this year, but if Duke LeJeune is there and playing any of the Audiokinesis speakers, make sure you hear it/them. I have his Planetarium Betas (96 dB - I assume that qualifies?) and love them.
Maybe you can tell me ??????????
Cut-Throat
Doesn't look like he's exhibiting this year. He had told me a few months ago that he didn't think he would, but then I found out yesterday that he'll be there participating in a room acoustics forum. Guess he's going just for that. Sorry...
you're going to be there, what, two whole days?

or two!

We loved them last year
John Wolfe of Classic loudspeakers will have his T-1's there which use my tractrix radial mid horns and tractrix tweeter horns with field coil drivers. I won't be there because of some other commitments. Bruce
but he was in the CAR room as he did some of the work on their new field coil speakers.

The new The Lotus Group Granada Feastrex hybrid w/digital crossover is certainly a curiousity. 92db @ $150K...
I'd be sure to check out the Lowther America Room. Dave Slagle has built some field coil motor assemblies that will be used with Lowther baskets/cones. And, Jeffery Jackson has cooked up a really cool mercury vapor thyratron power supply for energizing the coils. A must hear/see in my book.
I've had a "pre-show" listen to Dave Slage's FC drivers. You do not want to miss them.
John P.
Things are looking up! I wouldn't want to miss hearing something those two guys cooked up.
What about you?
You going and showing?
Boats and Fish!
I'd be sure & ck out their table too (Experience Music / Intact Audio), even though they don't have a room this year.
They "might" have a "surprise" driver, or something worth looking at...
...then I am sure that the Serious Stereo room may be good for a few rounds before someone gets a TKO.
Those that show up will likely find that both Dennis and his brother, who helps in the room, are just about the nicest people they are likely to meet in Audio.
Not that I would necessarily willingly trade my current system of Dennis', but if I woke up some morning and my system had been replaced with the one he shows at RAMF, I wouldn't go out and shoot myself.
It's hard work building a bad 2A3 SET amplifier and it's hard to screw up a large box enclosure for the Altec/Great Plains Audio 604-8H.

I would like to hear his rig.

Highwater Sound in rooms 1116 and 1118 always has very good sound. Last year they had TRON electronics and Horning loudspeakers and I thought they had among the best sound at the show. The power amps were 300B SE and the drove the speakers effortlessly. I think that the speakers are rated at 94db, but they sounded very fine.
Horning loudspeakers use Lowther drivers but add woofers and tweeters to flesh out the sound and to get around the usual Lowther issues.

That would be Classic Audio Reproduction.
But that's only if they are showing the same basic design as last year, which uses modified JBL drivers. They are using field coils and beryllium diaphragms on the horns and a JBL cone driver of some kind for the reflex bass with field coil added as well.
The older versions of their speakers used awful sounding TAD drivers for both the compression drivers and the reflex bass.
Not any more!
in the "cones and domes" world, the best of Audio Note is about as good as it gets, but not exactly "high efficiency" without careful corner placement and lots of room gain. Even then, I doubt their numbers, but with a decent 300B amp, they would sensitive enough and certainly tube friendly.
Boats and Fish!
I AM CURRENTLY BUILDING 2-WOOFERS THEY BOTH USE THE SAME FILD COIL MOTOR BUILT AROUND A JBL 2440/41ETC POT [GOOD LOW CARBON CASTING ]. A 600/1000 TOP PLATE IS ALSO USED FROM OTHER SPECIAL JBL WOOFERS THIS WAY YOU CAN UTILIZE AN UNDERHUNG COIL FOR OPTIMUM LOW DISTORTION . AGAIN THE CHOICE TO USE OLD JBL IS FOR ITS LOW CARBON CONTENT WHICH OPTIMIZES THE MAGNETIC FIELD. THE 1501-8 AND-16 UTILIZES THE K145 OR E145 FRAME TO ALLOW ME TO USE A DEEPER STRAIGHT SIDED ALL PAPER CONE WHICH I BELIEVE HAS GREATER SONIC ATTRIBUTES COMMON TO MOST OF THE MOST REKNOWNED WOOFER IN HISTORY[WE,ALTEC 515 JBL150-4C JENSEN ] THE 1502 IS USING A TAD FRAME AND 1602 CONE BUT HAS IT'S OVERHUNG COIL AND FORMER REPLACED WITH THE SAME UNDERHUNG COIL AND NOMEX FORMER I USE IN THE 1501. A 18" IS VERY CLOSE . FINALIZING THE CONE CHOICE IS NEAR.
AS FAR AS THE TAD'S SONIC ATTRIBUTES, I WILL ONLY COMMENT TO SAY THAT HAVING LIVED WTH THEIR ANNOMALIES FOR OVER 20YRS, I'VE HEARD THEM PERFORM POORLY TO QUITE GOOD, DEPENDING ON MUSIC TASTES ALL THE ELECTRONICS, SOFTWEAR,ROOM,CABLE AND ROOM TREATMENT HAVE IMMENCE FACTORS ON ONES ACCEPTANCE OF THEIR SYSTEM TO LIVE WITH. I HAVE ALWAYS TRIED TO LEAVE THE OPTIMIZERS[CABLES,CORDS, TREATMENT ETC. TO THE END USER
SINCE PERSONAL TASTE IS SO OBVIOUSLY VARIED.
THANKS FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATION OF "DON'T MISS THE CAR ROOM EVEN THOUGH I AM NOW CLASSIC AUDIO LOUDSPEAKERS
how many will actually be made.
I sure would only send money when sure there was something on the shelf ready to be shipped. I am talking about the FC drivers.
THEY ARE ALL AVAILABLE 2-3WK DELIVERY.
it's the custom made wooden mid horn that was designed and constructed at great time and expense by Dr. Edgar that would be the problem.
If I had the bucks, I'd just show up at RMAF this weekend, make John Wolfe a heck of an offer and have them shipped home!
As is stands, I'll just hang in the room at RMAF this weekend and enjoy them!
Boats and Fish!
HOPE YOU HAD A GOOD TIME AND ENJOYED THE MUSIC
I went to their site but there is not much there other than pictures.
Do you know their plans for the FC drivers?
Thanks,
Rick McInnis
TRY CLASSIC AUDIO LOUDSPEAKERS.COM
But I bet if you talked to John Wolfe or Bruce you could score a pair.
I'd love a pair of the 2441's with FC and Beryllium diaphragms for my Edgar Titans, but the drivers alone would probably cost more that the list price of the Titans.

unobtanium.
There seems to be lots of unobtanium these days. And I would worry even after you paid for this unobtanium it would remain unobtanium. Thus making it virtual unobtanium, the most mysterious substance in the world.
SO, I think I should be happy with what I have. At least, I have it and am not waiting for it wondering if my money was sent for nothing.
I wish the best to those who feel this is something they must have.
May you make Job look impatient in comparison.
I CAN SEND THEM COD IF YOUR WORRIED
CAR audio is just a couple miles from me and I have heard his stuff at many local meetings. They are beautiful and SHOULD sound great, but five minutes with them and I am out of the room. This is just my taste, but I found them very shouty....almost like they are too dynamic and the high energy pasages just wreck my right ear.
WHETHER THEY ARE IN YOUR BUDJET OR NOT. YOU SHOULD TRY THE FIELD COIL VERSIONS WITH YOU MOST FAMILIAR MUSIC
Ditto...when I heard their TAD-loaded Hartsfelds.
YOUR INVTED TO TRY THEM WITH THE FIELD COIL DRIVERS[4PER CAB] THEY ARE STILL MY MOST FUN SPEAKER. THE T-1'S ARE THE MOST ACCURATE' MY OPINION
The new T-1's with the Field Coil Drivers (NOT TAD) and the Edgar built Horns is worth the flight to Denver.
No comparison whatsoever with earlier CAR designs which used TAD drivers.
That said, I have heard the TAD driver CAR Hartsfelds sound decent and in fact quite good, at CES/THE show in Las Vegas a few years ago.
But a RMAF they just drive me out of the room.
Go figure.
Boats and Fish!
Don't blame the TADs. It's all the horns and/or implementation that results in bad sound (if any). TAD components are about as good as it gets, better than JBL generally in terms of engineering and build quality. Bert Locanthi, the brains behind many of the JBL designs from the golden age, went to Pioneer to start TAD. They basically gave him carte blanche to do what he wanted, which was what JBL could have been if they had the funds and dedication. (IIRC).
That said, I've never been partial to the CAR speakers, they always sounded edgy to me.
Is Josh showing at RMAF? He's been working on some pretty impressive field-coil drivers.

are modified with field coil magnets on the mid bass(D140?) and mid compression driver (2441?) and custom make beryllium diaphragms on the Edgar designed mid horn and horn loaded tweeter.
Boats and Fish!
I did notice that, but still, I think TAD surpasses JBL as far as overall driver design. What the FC motor brings to the picture, I don't know. I bet FC TADs would be sweet! ;-)
-Ed
THE REASON I DID NOT BUILD THE FIELD COIL MOTOR FOR THE TAD DIAPHRAMS IS QUITE SIMPLE. WHILE THEY WERE CLOSER TO CUTTING EDGE AT THE TIME THERE DIAPHRAM DESIGN IS OBSOLETE' THE BERYLLIUM DIAPHRAM IS TERMINATED ON A BERYLLIUM SURROUND. VERY STIFF CAN'T BE PROPERLY USED AT LOWER FREQUENCIES AND HAS VERY POOR YOUNG'S MODULOUS SPECS.
MUCH BETTER RESULTS WERE OBTAINED WITH HARMON'S 2435 UNIT GOTTO MADE FOR THEM. BUT THE DROPPED THE BALL HALFWAY DOWN THE FIELD WHEN THEY MADE THE 4" UNIT FOR THE NEW EVEREST SYSTEM.
ENTER BRUSH-WELLMAN AND THEIR QUEST FOR A MUCH IMPROVED ASSEMBLY YOU CAN CK OUT THEIR WEBSITE www.truextent.com KNOWING THESE WERE GOING TO HIT THE MARKET IN LATE 09 WAS THE THING THAT PUSHED ME OVER THE EDGE TO BRING THIS SYSTEM TO FRUITION
and which use the TAD drivers.
Have you heard the speakers with the field coil modified JBL drivers and Bruce Edgar designed horn as pictured above?
This is the only speaker in the CAR lineup that deserves a serious listen, in my opinion, and as far as I know it may be the only be the only pair in existence.
Boats and Fish!
No, I've not heard that one. I heard the one with the plastic horn.

I would be perfectly happy with them.
