on their own site, I was able to find original resolutions. The Strauss Songs with Felicity Lott (the one to have) is upsampled to 24/96.
I look forward to acquiring many Warner Classical EMI reissues (Perlman/Previn Sibelius VC is a sleeper) and I'm really hoping that they went back to the master tapes!
Follow Ups:
If they offer a download at 24/96, that's because the master was recorded at 24/96. Some of their Vaughan Williams offerings are available at only 24/48 - again, because that's the resolution of those particular masters.
Spectrographic software will show whether a given 24/96 download actually has that resolution, or whether it's simply a lower-rez recording which has been placed in a higher-rez container. (In general, from what I've read on various posts, both here and elsewhere, this seems to be a problem in the pop/rock world more than in the classical world.)
I think the Chandos download offerings have been exemplary in this regard, i.e., their 24/96 downloads REALLY WERE/ARE recorded at 24/96.
(BTW, I share your enthusiasm for the Lott recordings of the Strauss orchestral songs.)
