In a previous post I was asking about a possible replacement for my Marantz AV7701 which has now completely failed.
It was suggested that I use my Oppo BDP-103 for Video and buy a MC preamp for audio. If that works, what multichannel preamp would you recommend?
Follow Ups:
Thanks to all. I bought a Parasound P7 and am very impressed with it. There are several areas of very clear improvement (which we audio-obsessives do not really need of course).
The P7 can be adjusted for R_L and F_B balance but I am used to adjusting multichannel balance with a signal in each speaker that I can tweak using a RS microphone/meter at the listening position.
Know of a test recording that has that?
I do not have access to the P7 now but I recall that there is no option to access the channel levels independently. I think the best you can do, except for by-ear settings, is to feed a wide range pink noise to all channels from a file/disc and, by plugging/unplugging individual inputs (with the preamp muted) access individual channels.
1. Measure center channel o/p and set L and R to match by using the L/R Bal.
2. Measure center channel o/p and set Lrear and Rrear to match using the F/B Bal.
(I do not think there is an option to balance the rear L/Rs separate from the front L/Rs.)
There is really only one multichannel analog preamp on the market today and that is the Parasound P7. The NuForce MCP-18 may still be around and it is much cheaper and competent but not nearly as good as the Parasound.
Discontinued options are th Audio Research MP1, Bel Canto Pre6, Conrad-Johnson MET1, Meitner Switchman-3 and the McCormack MAP-1.
I guess that makes a statement, doesn't it!
Thanks.
Hi, I have a Bel Canto Pre6 analog multi channel preamp available for sale, I just haven't posted it anywhere. If you are interested, send me an email. Kal gave it a very positive review.
