For a Sony SACD player which was introduced in 2009 and no longer available according to the Sony store this is completely silly posting.

If there is an April production, which is what there seems to be, it's worth writing about. Such a great player.

The Sony SCD-XA5400ES is an obsolete player and Sony should put it in a museum. Accuphase has a museum for their old stuff. Sony has abandoned high-end SACD long time ago. I own a Sony SCD-XA9000ES SACD player, bought in 2004, which has better build quality and reliability than the SCD-XA5400ES.Sony created a wonderful format, brought it up to speed, then pulled the legs out from under it. Many of us who invested in SACDs and SACD playback are frustrated at Sony's lack of support for those of us who love the format. If Sony were still supporting SACD, there would be new releases on their website. Take a peek, it has not been updated for many years.

I own a modified Sony XA777ES, and the build quality is better than the 5400 - but the 5400 in stock form sounds nicer. I also own a SCD-C333ES, so I have owned three Sony SACD players.
I don't have any reliability issues with the 5400. To say that "SCD-XA9000ES SACD player, bought in 2004, which has better build quality and reliability than the SCD-XA5400ES" means nothing to me.

Geoff
A new Sony model continues the tradition of weighing less than the previous model so durability and reliability will become an issue over time. Look also at the Sony Blu-ray players for example.

Gross weight of a disc player does not necessarily equate to better sound. You need to be more specific about where that weight is weightier and why that increased weight means longer part life and/or improved sound. Advances in material development/implementation have and are trumping part weight as principle criteria for durability. I have an old Victor phonograph from early days of sound and its a lead weight. Does that mean it was more reliable or sounded better than lightweight players?
At Accuphase the weight of their players increases with the build quality and durability. Accuphase, what else? The Sony SCD-XA5400ES SACD player, weight 10.2 kg (22.5 lbs).DP-400 CD player, 13.6 kg (30.0 lbs)
DP-510 CD player, 17.8 kg (39.2 lbs)
DP-600 SACD player, 18.5 kg (40.8 lbs)
DP-700 SACD player, 27.0 kg (59.5 lbs)
DP-900 SACD Transport, 30.0 kg (66.14 lbs)
DP-901 Digital Processor, 23.4 kg (51.59 lbs)Note from Accuphase on modifications:
Any modifications to Accuphase equipment other than what Accuphase allows, shall put your unit out of warranty. The consequent risks that might arise from the modifications are yours.

Agreed-
the gross weight of any CD player says volumes about its build quality, wether it is an all aluminum or all copper chassis.
